Diseases of the euonymus

White coating on euonymus leaves
The most common euonymus diseaseis powdery mildew. Of the various species of euonymus found in our gardens, the common euonymus is the most common victim of this disease. But powdery mildew also appears on other species of euonymus, such as the header photo showing Fortune's Euonymus affected by powdery mildew. As a result of powdery mildew , a white, powdery coating appears on the euonymus leavesOver time, the affected leaves begin to turn brown, curl, and then fall off. Inside the fungal bloom in the fall there are dark fruiting bodies of the fungus. The fungus can overwinter in the form of mycelium in buds or in fruiting bodies on fallen leaves.

Infected leaves and shoots should be removed on an ongoing basis so that the fungus does not spread from the fallen leaves.Whole euonymus shrubs should be sprayed with fungicides , e.g. Topsin M 500 SC or Signum 33 WG.
If we want to avoid the use of chemical fungicides, we can use ecological plant protection products prepared by ourselves. Spraying horsetail manure and tansy decoction will be helpful. We can also reach for a ready-made preparation of field horsetail, Evasiol, available in garden stores (dissolve 10 ml of the agent in 1 liter of water and spray the plants every 10-15 days).

Browning of leaves and dieback of euonymus shoots
Anotherfungal disease that attacks euonymusis phytophthorosis, which causes euonymus shoot dieback. The symptoms of this disease may vary depending on the type of euonymus. Usuallythe edges of the leaves on single euonymus shoots slightly redden or brownThen a brown spot appears at the base of the shoot, gradually covering the entire circumference. This leads to browning and shoot dieback. The growth of the whole plant is slowed down, and the affected shoots wither over time.
Shoots with symptoms of this disease should be cut out , the plant should be watered and sprayed with the biological preparation Polyversum WP. As a preventive measure, water and spray also other plants adjacent to the diseased euonymus .

If treatment with Polyversum WP does not bring the expected results, chemical fungicides can be used. Effective incombating phytophthora on euonymus shrubswill be e.g. Magnicur Energy 840 SL and Scorpion 325 SC.

Oval spots on the leaves of the euonymus surrounded by a border
Ifthe leaves of the euonymus show round or oval spots , brown at first, then brown, with a darker border, this may indicate an anthracnose attack. This euonymus disease also manifests itself with brown or brown, slightly recessed spots on the shootsIn the spots where the spots are formed, the shoots may break off, and the part of the shoot above the lesion will gradually dry out.
Fighting this euonymus diseaseconsists in systematically cutting out the affected shoots below the spot where the spots appear, as well as spraying with Topsin M 500 SC and Switch 62.5 WG.

Pests of euonymus

Holes in euonymus leaves
Troublesome pests of euonymusare swollen pests. Adult beetles appear in the period from May to June and for several weeks they feed on the euonymus, gnawing holes in the euonymus leaves. The leaves of the euonymus are clearly gnawed from the edges. At the end of June, the female otters lay eggs, from which the larvae hatch. They feed on the roots and the root neck of the shrub, which often results in the death of the entire euonymus.

Affected euonymus bushes during the feeding period(in June) should be sprayed with Mospilan 20 SP. Let's also remember aboutfighting beetle larvae, i.e. grubs that feed in the ground under the euonymus bushesTheir numbers will be reduced by using the preparation for P-Drakol grubs. Control of the larvae will reduce the risk of beetles reappearance andgnawing holes in the euonymus leavesin the following year.
Mosaic discoloration and spots on the euonymus leaves
Euonymus shrubs can also be attacked by the spider mite. As a result of the appearance of this pest, euonymusmosaic-like discoloration is formed on the upper side of the leaf blade, and the euonymus leaves turn brown and dry over timeThe spider mites feed on the underside of the leaf, but you will only notice them after using a magnifying glass, as they are very petty. You can also put a white sheet under the bush and shake the shoots. If there are dark, fast-moving points on the sheet, it is a sign that we managed to shake the spider mites from the bush.
Against spider mites on euonymuswe can spray with natural oil preparations Emulpar 940 EC or Agrocover (remember to spray the plant very carefully, also all the leaves from underneath, where there are the most pests). If these sprays prove to be insufficient, we can choose from chemical spider mites: Karate Zeon 050 CS, Karate Gold or Sanium Przędziorki.
Caterpillars on bumblebee
Euonymus bushes can also be attacked by tents. As early as Aprilon bumblebees you can see clusters of caterpillars hidden under light-thread swirlsAs the spraying hardly reaches the caterpillars hidden under the swath, we should first of all cut out fragments of shoots with visible caterpillars and shafts (preferably them destroy immediately, e.g.burn). In June, the larvae pupate in bright cocoons into butterflies. Then we should also eliminate the cocoons we see.
Spraying systemic and systemic insecticides, such as Polysect 005 SL, can be effective against the caterpillars feeding on the euonymus
