Autumn lawn planting

Basic decision - seed selection

The key to growing a beautiful lawn is the right variety. In a home garden, the best turf is abrasion-resistant, fast-rooting, decorative, but sprouts even at low temperatures.

When choosing mixtures, remember that their growth often depends on specific conditions, such as the degree of exposure to light, frequency of use or soil moisture. As a result, there are varieties on the market that can be grown in continuous shade or are resistant to frequent trampling.

The self-compacting grass, which has recently been on sale, is a great alternative to traditional mixtures. Its unique feature is reproduction by rhizomes, thanks to which it achieves high density, using much less seeds. The turf regenerates itself, so it does not require frequent additional seeding. This unique grass growing method is more versatile and suitable for a wider variety of uses.

This is how self-compacting grass works

Self-compacting grass grows differently than traditional grass mixtures - it grows in all directions. After a month, more clumps of grass grow from the side rhizomes (runners). The process produces such a dense turf that it is difficult for even the ubiquitous weeds to break through it. In this case, additional seeding will not be needed, because the turf regenerates itself after damage.

The growth rate is also impressive - the first sprouts appear a week after sowing and develop even at a temperature 4 ° C lower than traditional varieties. This effect is related to the increased resistance of grass to intense weather conditions.

This should be remembered when setting up a lawn in the fall

Until the end of September, we can comfortably set up a lawn from scratch or sow grass in places where it has been mechanically thinned or has not caught on after the last seedings. In autumn it is less hot, so the grass has a better chance of sprouting without the risk of burning out or drying out.The growth of turf is also favored by more frequent rainfall in early autumn.

Seeds are sown crosswise, i.e. at two different angles. We are then more sure that we have spread them more densely. After sowing, the seeds should be ruffled or covered with a thin, 2-cm layer of peat substrate. Then roll them down, i.e. press them against the top layer of soil. After sowing, water the lawn with a small stream at a dose of about 10 liters of water per 1 m2. When it is dry, we irrigate the turf once a week. Grass seeds emerge after about 3 weeks.

Young lawn care

We start mowing the first time when the young grass is about 10 cm high (we mow it at about 6 cm).The next mowing is performed every week, until the end of November. In order for the grass to overwinter well, it is recommended to fertilize with potassium sulphate in October at a dose of 3 kg per 100 m2.

The autumn planting and renovation of the lawn should be supplemented with soil aeration.By removing or loosening the top layers of the substrate, we deliver oxygen to the soil, while the compact surface promotes the development of moss and weeds. On small lawns, we can even aerate them with a pitchfork or cheap spikes attached to shoes. However, it is more convenient to aerate the soil with a special roller with spikes or an aerator.

Fertilization is also a key autumn treatment. For sandy soils, we especially recommend a compost rich in humus, which should be scattered to a thickness of 0.5 to 1 cm.We supply house lawns once a year - ideally in autumn, but nothing prevents you from sprinkling the fertilizer in spring. Important: spread the compost over a thoroughly raked lawn.
