Garden recipe: busy July

Why did the hedge lose leaves?

Brown spots have recently appeared on my hedge. Soon after, the leaves fell in these places. Before I noticed the disturbing changes, I saw a neighbor spraying the vines. Could his treatments harm my plants?

It depends on the preparation used by the neighbor, time of day and distance at which he was spraying.I would look for the causes of browning and leaf fall in the plant itself. They may be caused by fungal diseases, e.g. anthracnose or leaf spot. Their symptoms are easy to recognize - small brown spots appear on the surface of the leaves of the shrubs, often with a darker border.

After a few days, they enlarge, eventually covering the entire leaf surface. In the case of the first disease, the leaves curl and hang on the shoots for a long time.Fungal diseases are particularly abundant in warm and humid summers.

Can I sow radish in summer?

I know that lettuce and radishes should not be grown in the middle of summer, because they can be damaged by the heat. Maybe there are some ways to protect the summer sowing of these vegetables from the scorching sun?

In this case, the sown vegetables must be provided with a natural umbrella. You should plant or sow spinach in advance. It has lush leaves that will successfully protect the emerging lettuce or radish.Spinach should be sown at intervals of about 50 cm, and between the rows, plant lettuce, radish, leaf parsley, chicory, onion for chives, etc.

When the young seedlings have grown up and become more resistant to the sun, the spinach can be harvested for eating. If we are not its supporters, cut leaves can be left as mulch or whole plants can be used for green fertilizer.

How to protect yourself from the wind?

Our plot is situated on a hill. No large plants grow on it,and when the wind blows, it is difficult to work here - let alone relax. How and what is best to make a windscreen?

First of all, such a wall should be permeable. The airtight barrier causes the wind to lean against it, then bounce back, and then spin with even greater force on the other side. You should therefore adopt the method of setting "sieves" with smaller and smaller meshes. The first barrier may be a rail fence, behind which we will plant bushes at a distance of 30-40 cm - the second barrier. The windshield is assumed to stop the wind to a distance equal to 10 times its height.

So shrubs 1 meter high will cover 10 meters of the area. If the wall is still too low, it is worth planting trees behind the bushes. Rhododendrons with two-necked hawthorn shaped like a tree create a very effective windproof composition. Rhododendrons have an additional advantage - they are evergreen, so they protect against strong gusts all year round.

How can hydrangeas be multiplied?

A friend of mine has a lot of hydrangeas in her garden. She claims that she does not buy shrubs, but multiplies them herself. I have never succeeded in this art yet. I am asking for advice on how to propagate these beautiful plants by yourself.

The easiest way to propagate hydrangeas is to cut off the lower, thick shoots of this year and place them in a vase. After a few weeks, the twigs will sprout and it will be possible to transfer them to the pots.Remember to change the water in the vase frequently during rooting. A slightly longer but equally effective way to obtain hydrangea seedlings is to cover the lower shoots with soil. Bend the selected twig, without cutting it, from the mother plant.

Place it on the soil, hold it with a skewer or stone and cover it with soil. In the next season, the bent shoot should be an independent, rooted plant. Then it can be cut off from the mother plant.

Garden stores offer a special soil mix for rooting and propagating plants - such a purchase can be helpful.

What is this magnolia?

I saw a magnolia flowering twice a year on a TV program. I don't remember its name. What variety is this?

It's probably a magnolia 'Winelight'. This is a novelty on the horticultural market, so it is not available in all stores yet.The tree actually blooms twice a year - in spring and summer. The flowers that appear in summer, however, are a bit poorer.Closed buds have a slightly wine color, and the inside are snow-white.Growing this plant is no different than the way you care for other magnolias. Like all representatives of this species, it likes permeable soil with a slightly acidic pH and a warm and wind-sheltered position.
