June in the vegetable garden

Abundant harvest

In June we already harvest quite abundant crops, for example early cabbage, various lettuces, radishes, kohlrabi, rhubarb, asparagus, green peas, chives, onions with chives. We harvest tomatoes from under the covers at the end of the month and cucumbers.

We are finishing the harvest of rhubarb

Harvesting the rhubarb should be completed at the end of June. Thanks to this, next year the petioles will still be thick. At the end of the harvest, fertilize the rhubarb, using 15 grams of compound fertilizer and nitrogen fertilizer per 1 m2.

We remove the covers from the beds

The covers made of agrotextile or perforated foil can be removed from accelerated crops. The exact date depends on the size of the sunrise and the course of the weather. We remove the covers on a cloudy day. On a sunny day, we remove the covers before the evening. If it is still cold, leave the coats a little longer.

We supply seedlings

Seedlings planted 2-3 weeks earlier require top dressing. If symptoms of nutrient deficiency appear on the leaves, such plants are immediately supplemented with foliar fertilizer.

Watering in the vegetable garden

During drought, we need to water vegetables regularly. For example, kohlrabi, carrots and radishes require frequent watering. Remember that cold water straight from the water supply is not suitable for watering thermophilic vegetables, such as cucurbits or tomatoes. Therefore, each plot should be provided with a suitable tank in which the water will be collected. It may be, for example, a rainwater barrel.

We care for the beans

After emergence, we often control the growth of beans. This plant tends to deviate from the pole. Therefore, we have to bend the young plants towards the pole and wrap it around it, remembering that the beans are left-handed.

We sow green beans

Until the end of June, we can sow string bean seeds. Thanks to this, we will ensure the harvest of pods until September.
