Bergenia - silhouetteForm of growth of bergenStand for BergenBergenia - careThe homeland of Bergenia is forests and wet mountain slopes of Central and East Asia. It is a relatively durable plant, therefore it has also been adopted in Europe without much difficulty. She won her sympathy for at least several reasons - she is beautiful, durable and can be grown in various positions.
It is partially evergreen. Bergenia can be grown in a rock garden, in a perennial bed, on the shore of a pond and in the vicinity of plantings of woody plants. It is especially successful with ferns, ornamental grasses and most species with delicate leaves, e.g. with tavules. Bergenia leaves are very durable.
Bergenia comes in many interesting varieties. Most grow to a height of 30-60 cm, blooming white, red and pink.Inflorescences are spherical at first, then umbrella-shaped. Recommendable are, among others such varieties as 'Morgenroete' (pink flowers), 'Abendglut' (purple-red flowers), 'Abendglocken' (dark red flowers).
The leaves of these varieties turn red or brown-red in autumn, becoming an attractive decoration for a winter garden.Flowering of most varieties lasts from March to May, some bergenies such as 'Morgenroete' and 'Herbstbluete', blooms in summer and fall.
Bergenies take on almost every position. For optimal conditions, a semi-shade in a moderately moist, fertile, well-drained medium is best.Flowering is slightly less in full shade. If the cultivation is to be grown in the sun, the substrate must be watered regularly. In dry soil, the leaves do not reach their full size.
Bergenia likes peace and does not tolerate overzealous grooming. After flowering or in autumn, the plants can be propagated by division.
