Spring seedling - Ficaria verna

Table of contents

Blooming in mid-Marchspring kernel(Latin Ficaria verna) is a small and modest plant. It attracts attention with beautiful, though small, golden-yellow flowers and lush green, shiny leaves. However, the real charm is shown by plants growing in large groups, creating truly beautiful living carpets, decorated with a whole lot of flowers. In nature it grows on the edges of forests, roadside thickets and wetlands, i.e. places where it is able to find enough moisture for itself in the spring.

Spring grains - cultivation in the garden

If we wantspring grainsto appear in our garden permanently, then in July, when the leaves are dry and the plants are dormant (lasting until the spring of next year), it is enough to collect two or three handfuls soil from the place where the grain curls grew and transfer to the bed. In such a volume of the substrate there will be a whole mass of bulbous roots, thanks to which plants will also appear in our spring.
In the garden forspring kernel , choose a place with moist soil throughout the spring and rich in humus and nutrients. In such conditions, plants will not only please us with beautiful flowers, but also grow quickly, creating effective carpets. Seedlings are great on rockers, in flower beds, in partial shade along hedges, but also in the shade under larger trees.

We must remember that in June the aboveground part of the plant dies.A good idea to fill in empty spaces is to plant small annuals that will decorate the bed for the rest of the season. In my garden, seedlings grow around the base of taller leaf-shedding shrubs. Thanks to this, they have a lot of light in spring, i.e. during the growing season, and in May, when the sun begins to warm more, they are shielded from it in the form of freshly developed leaves on shrubs.

Spring safflower - garden varieties

In addition to the basic species, there are also several garden varieties of this filigree plant. More and more often, in the offer of specialized nurseries producing perennials, you can find several very interesting varieties. They all have small flowers, but the number and color of petals are different from that of the original species. Some of them also have a very interesting pattern on the surface of the leaves, and somevarieties of gritare characterized by a brown or maroon color of the entire leaf blades.
The most popular of these areSpring Granola 'E.A. Bowles'with beautiful canary-yellow, full flowers slightly larger than those of the basic species.'Colarette'also with yellow, full flowers, but with strongly shortened petals, which form beautiful pompoms with a green center. Additionally, along the main nerve, there is a very decorative, burgundy pattern extending up to 2/3 of the leaf length. Finally, a true gem among the varieties -Spring Seeds 'Brazzen Hussy'with maroon-brown leaves that constitute a beautiful background for the development of lush yellow flowers. A variety that is hard to come by, but it is worth asking about it during spring shopping in a garden center, because it is one of the most beautiful spring accents in any garden.
