Practical Gardener: alternative nemesis to surfinia

Table of contents

Broad Nemesia Nemesia fruticans from the leper family is still a rare guest on our balconies and terraces.Perhaps this is due to the fact that we still remember old nemeses with quite flaccid shoots and sparse flowers.New varieties are perfect plants for balcony decoration.

Their greatest advantages are exceptionally abundant (and long) flowering and a wide range of flower colors. They include both cool colors (blue, purple) and warm (yellow, orange, red), and also many intermediate shades or interesting combinations of several colors, e.g.white-red, blue-white.

Nemesis flowers are also distinguished by a specific structure - they have four petals pointing upwards and one large, formed from the fusion of two smaller ones at the bottom. Its additional ornament are often yellow protrusions at the base. The habit of plants depends on the variety.Nemesis cultivars from two groups are cultivated most often: Sunsatia and Karoo.

The varieties from the Sunsatia series have slightly overlapping shoots and flowers in the colors of fire, white and pink. They can be used both in standing pots and in hanging baskets.Varieties from the Karoo group are more compact. Not only the shoots are lower, but also the inflorescences. The flowers form very profusely. Cool colors dominate among them. Regardless of the variety, nemeses grow best in sunny places. They pay back for the sun with a multitude of flowers.
