Practical Gardener: natural protection against winter

Table of contents

Ornamental grasses belong to a small group of plants that are more harmful than good for autumn cutting.Numerous shoots tied in a pole will protect the plant from freezing due to persistent wind.

This solution concerns the most popular ornamental grasses. Japanese mole Pennisetum alopecuroides, Miscathus miscanthus or Panicum virgatum, whose narrow leaves and fluffy inflorescences decorate an autumn-winter garden - this plant is used to protect against frost. Apart from the decorative qualities, there are practical reasons for leaving the leaves dry, as the leaves can serve as protection against frost.

The Cortaderia selloana pampas grass has a different role. Gathered together and tied at the top, they not only protect against temperature drops, but also against the moisture-sensitive roots of the shoots getting wet.

It is better to trim grass clumps in early spring, before fresh blades appear among last year's shoots.Similar care principles should be applied to other "grass-like" species, e.g. garden tritome or Kniphophia uvaria.
