Diseases and pests in May

Table of contents

May is the month of the abundance of flowering plants and the awakening of life in the garden, you can hear birds singing from everywhere and buzzing bumblebees and bees. But among the beauty of the flowers, there are some disturbing signs of disease and pests attacking our gardens. See what diseases and pests attack plants in May. How to identify them and how to deal with them? Here are some tips and solutions for the gardener's pain in May.

Rose shoot larva. It can be a papilloma or a rose leaf flaccid

During my visits to the plot in May, I noticed that the roses had wilted young growths.Closer inspection confirmed to me that they were attacked by a pest. It could have been adungwormorrose leaf curlDungwort is a hymenoptera, the larvae of which feed in the youngest shoots, gnawing longitudinal tunnels along the young shoot, causing the shoot to die off . There is no effective chemical method that will completely kill the feeding larvae, so we remove the affected shoots as far as the he althy place.

Withered young rose growths are the effect of feeding the germinal moth

Other pests noticed on rose hips were aphids. They attacked both young growths and older shrub shoots. You can fight them biologically or chemically, just for this pest there are many measures available, but you need to know that it is best to have two different ones and use them alternately to be effective. You also have to look at the other plants, because if the aphid appears on the rose, it will probably attack other garden specimens as well.

Aphid colonies also appeared on roses and other plants

This year is favorable for pests, because I also noticed the bitten leaves on the rose. When I looked underneath the leaf, I sawturtle larva . To combat it, we can use insecticides, such as Steward 30 WG, Fastac 100 EC,Karate Zeon 050 CS or Sumi - Alpha 050 EC.

The leaflet larvae gnaw holes in the leaves. You can find the larvae by looking under the leaves from the bottom

I go further behind the lawn, where fruit trees grow. Here I was surprised by a mound of earth protruding above the grass. But it is not a mole, but ants

I noticed a few strangely withered twigs on the cherry. This is a sign that she is attacked bybrown rot of stone trees , also known as moniliosis. The disease is most common on cherries, but also affects other stone trees. First, it attacks flowers and leaves, which turn brown and die, and over time, a white coating appears, which leads to the death of entire branches. The dead branches with a piece of he althy twig (two he althy eyes) are removed and the tree is sprayed with Topsin M 500 SC. Failure to react in time results in the formation of brown rot spots on the ripening fruits, and later with cream warts arranged irregularly on the surface of the peel.

" Apple and pear grows a few steps further. There, however, an apple flower plant attacked. The symptom of the presence of this pest is still closed, dried and brown flower petals, even after flowering. Kwieciak is a beetle with a characteristic snout, black and brown in color, with a bright, grayish V-shaped mark on its back. In flower buds, beetle larvae develop. After reaching maturity, they hatch and eat the leaves of the apple tree. When they get the right amount of food, they hide in hideouts and stay there until the end of August, and then start looking for winter hiding places. In the case of small trees and a small amount of the pest, we tear off and destroy the infested flowers. In the case of high intensity of the flower, chemical control is applied, which is carried out in the period just before and during bud cracking with the following preparations: Mospilan 20 SP, Fastac 100 EC, Karate Zeon 050 CS. Spraying is performed on sunny days, at a minimum temperature of 12 ° C."

Red convex spots on currant leaves are the result of feedingcurrant aphidThe aphid's feeding reduces the assimilation surface of the leaves, inhibits the growth of new leaves and shoots and reduces the yield. The leaves are deformed and twisted. There may be several species of aphids on the currant, but all of them are combated with the same aphid agents. To combat them, the following substances are used: Pirimor 500 WG and Mospilan 20 SP of systemic action. It is worth adding garden soap to the spraying so that the spraying spreads more precisely and adheres to the leaves and pests.

Lilac Violin is the cause of the holes gouged on the leaves of onion flowers and vegetables. We collect and destroy beetles

You also have to remove the eggs laid by this pest …

… as well as its larvae!

On a vegetable bed, I spotted garliclilac chanterelleLilac chanterelle and a similar onion chrysanthemum are quite common pests of garden lilies. So it was a sign to check the lilies as well. I also encountered a few of these pests on them. I carefully checked all the garlic and lily leaves for eggs. I found a few such leaves. I removed them and destroyed the eggs placed on them. I did the same with beetles. On one of the lily the chanterelle must have been there much earlier, because I also found hatched larvae that had eaten one of the lily's leaves.

With a small amount of the pest in amateur crops, the control of this pest consists in regular plant inspection, catching the chimpanzee and destroying the eggs laid. If we do have to use chemicals, it must be done quickly before the beetles can lay their eggs as the eggs are resistant to insecticides. For spraying against violin, we can use one of the insecticides, e.g. Fastac 100 EC. Here, too, it is worth adding garden soap to the spraying.

A nearby garden mallow was attacked bymallow rustRusty dots (on the upper side of the leaf) and brown lumps (on the underside of the leaves) appeared on the leaves of the plant. It is a fairly common fungal disease found on mallow and quite difficult to control. The disease is difficult to control, especially when other mallow grows in the neighboring gardens and no protective treatments are carried out on them. Therefore, it is worth asking your neighbors to fight this disease as well.

Sick mallow leaves must be removedand the whole plant should be sprayed with rust agent. The protection of the mallow should be started at the very beginning of the plant growth, by making protective sprays, which must be repeated every 10-14 days throughout the season.Unfortunately, it is quite difficult and troublesome. Means for mallow rust are e.g .: Dithane NeoTec 75 WG, Amistar 250 SC, Score 250 EC, Topsin M 500 SC, Discus 500 WG. Use at least two different preparations alternately.
A bit further on the discount, the wet May weather did its job. Tulips have long faded, but a fungal disease has appeared on the tulip leaves. Judging by the appearance of the leaves, I suspect gray mold. Unfortunately, tulips attacked with gray mold must be dug up and thrown away. He althy tulips growing nearby should be preventively sprayed with agents to combat gray mold. In order to prevent the occurrence of this disease in subsequent years, it is worth changing the place of cultivation, not planting tulips too densely and limiting nitrogen fertilization, because its excess promotes the development of the disease.
