Scissors are the best tool for cutting hedgesThey are best suited for cutting hedges of thuja, privet, pimple, evergreen boxwood, yews, shrubs, columnar junipers , Thunberg barberry or tawuł.
It is important that the handles of the scissors are lined with a good material or perforation , thanks to which we will hold the tool firmly in our hand. The weight of the scissors is also an important aspectCutting hedges with heavy scissors for a whole day is really a lot of effort. The hedge trimmer should also run smoothlyDo not over tighten the bolt connecting the two blades to prevent the cutting parts from jamming.
There are two basic types of mechanical shears:scissors with a straight bladeandscissors with a corrugated edge of the blade .
A hedge trimmer with a straight bladeis suitable for correcting and shaping young and soft shoots, e.g. hedges from Japanese tavula or evergreen boxwood. The blades of such scissors must always be well sharpened. Blunt scissors irritate and damage shoots and leaves, making a trimmed hedge look unattractive. Damaged fragments of shoots or leaves are then the cause of many fungal diseases that attack plants growing in a hedge.

Scissors with a wavy blade edgework well in hedges made of spruce or very popular thuja. The wavy cutting edges of the shears prevent thicker shoots from slipping out of the blades during cutting. Personally, I use them most often for trimming all kinds of deciduous shrub hedges. It takes a little longer to sharpen them than standard scissors with a straight blade, but the specificity and efficiency of cutting give better results. Telescopic scissors with a corrugated bladeWe can use them to trim higher hedges and adjust the length of the handle as needed.
Tall and long hedges need appropriate electric shears to trim.Electric hedge trimmers must have a good quality blade, with no cavities or bends. They must also start and stop immediately when the button is held or released. If properly sharpened, they speed up the work and do not harm cut hedges.
Electric shears can be used to cut cinquefoil and barberry hedges very wellRemember, however, that they must be perfectly sharpened. Blunt scissors can damage plant shoots quite badly, leading to weakness and disease. It is then necessary to cut such shoots with a hand pruner, which gives us additional work. The electric scissors must not be used when the hedge is wet or raining
Electric hedge trimmer
Many people use electric shearsto trim thuja hedges. If we want to trim a thuja hedge, we should do it 2-3 times during the growing season. Cutting too thick shoots (about 1 cm in diameter and higher) with electric shears may damage the shoots or not cut them at all. These are simply too thick shoots for such shears and we will only worsen the condition of the blades or the entire guide of the electric hedge trimmer.
Good to know! Not all hedges are good for shear pruning. A laurel hedge requires pruning with a pruner. East laurel is susceptible to scissors because the damaged leaf becomes brown. Use laurel pruning shears to prune only the shoots, without damaging the leaves.
