September vegetable garden

Table of contents

Celery bleaching

About 2 weeks before the planned harvest, we whiten the edible stalks of the celery. For this purpose, we wrap them with light-proof material, e.g. thick paper or dark foil.

Topping out of Brussels sprouts

At the end of the month, we announce the peak of the growth of Brussels sprouts, which improves the growth and maturation of the heads.

Watering cabbage

Plants that produce large vegetative parts and harvested in autumn still require intensive irrigation. So we remember to water cruciferous vegetables, lettuce, leek, radishes.

Protection of vegetables against cold

In September, the air temperature at night and in the morning may drop to several degrees Celsius. To protect vegetables from damage and prolong their vegetation, we cover them overnight with transparent foil or white fleece - just like we did in spring.

Drying beans for seeds

We continue to dry the beans. This is best done in warm, airy rooms, greenhouses, or outdoors, weather permitting.
