Spring pruning of shrub and bouquet hydrangeas (Tip)

Table of contents

Hydrangeas: shrub and bouquet have recently been gaining more and more recognition among plant breeders, because numerous varieties with beautiful inflorescences made of numerous barren flowers have been introduced to cultivation.

In order to enjoy their view longer, in spring, when the bushes do not have developed leaves, the plants should be trimmed low, e.g. at a height of 20-30 cm from the soil surface, i.e. above the 3-4 buds.During this treatment, we also cut out small shoots, leaving the thickest ones, on which flowers have grown.

In shrub hydrangea, annual pruning can be carried out low, but in older bouquet hydrangea shrubs we shorten the annual growths of the previous year over 2-3 buds.Hydrangea bushes are demanding to cultivate because they have large leaves and inflorescences, so in spring, after pruning, remember to feed the plants, preferably with a compound fertilizer, such as Azofoska, or with well-decomposed manure, mulching the bushes within the root collar.
