Plants should not be transplanted. The less we disturb them, the faster and more lush their flowering will be.
We can choose from varieties with intensely red flowers, such as 'Rubra Maxima', light yellow, such as 'Lutea' and 'Golden Flag', and orange - 'Premier'. The 'Kroon up Kroon' variety forms a double ring of leaves, 'Striped Beauty' has yellow leaves with red stripes.
The chessboard likes warm and sunny places in a fertile, clay soil. For the soil to have good water absorption, it needs to be improved with gravel.
Bulbs are not suitable for long storage (they lose their germination capacity), so you need to plant them right after you buy them. They are dug into the ground in July and August at intervals of approx. 40 cm to a depth of approx. 30 cm.A five-centimeter sand drainage should be placed in the wells, thanks to which the bulbs will not be wet and rot. The chessboard needs a lot of nutrients, so in spring and autumn it needs to be fed with mature compost.
Checkerboard is a dominant plant, therefore it is best suited for plantings displayed in the center of the bed.Suitable for both solitaire arrangements and group (ring-shaped) arrangements.
There are two other equally attractive chessboard species available for garden cultivation: diced and Persian.
