Nandina domestica from India and China is one of those shrubs that are gaining more and more popularity in Western European countries, also as a plant for growing in containers. It owes its decorative qualities all year round: semi-evergreen trifoliate leaves, small white and yellow flowers appearing in early summer and dark red fruit.Nandina's advantage is also the autumn discoloration of the leaves.
Their red color is particularly intense in some varieties, e.g. 'Firepower', also produced in Polish nurseries. There are also varieties with white or pink fruits.Nandina shrubs usually reach 1-1.5 meters in height. They have a characteristic habit resembling a bamboo habit: they form erect, slightly branched shoots.
This feature is reflected in the English and German names of the species, which can be translated as "heavenly bamboo."In regions with milder climates, nandina can be grown in the ground, but in a quiet place and under winter cover, in other places it is recommended as a container plant stored in cool, bright rooms.
Nandina is a shrub with high vigor and low requirements. It can grow from places that are well sunlit (then the color of the leaves is more intense) to shaded. There are no special requirements for the substrate, but it grows better when it is fertilized regularly. In the container, the substrate should be constantly moist with good drainage.
