We plant a hedge

Table of contents

A hedge has many useful functions: it masks, protects against wind and dust, creates a natural acoustic screen and the backbone of the property. Autumn is coming and with it it is time to plant trees and shrubs.Plants planted in September and October take no worse than those from spring plantings - sometimes even better, because there is no tiring heat anymore, but there is more rain and the plants do not dry out.

It is also worth emphasizing that trees and shrubs planted in spring put all their energy into rooting, so there is no point in counting on a spectacular increase in above-ground shoots. When planting in the fall, the shrubs immediately bounce back the next year.

The most common commercially available seedlings are root and ballot cuttings. Balloted are cheaper. When planting plants, pay attention to the spacing between them.If you decide to use a hornbeam (a seedling 80-100 cm high), 3 trees per meter are planted.

Root-root cuttings dry up quickly, so if you plan to plant them only in a few days, you need to ditch them (dig them into the hole, cover the roots with soil and water abundantly). Je if we intend to plant the next day, just put them overnight in a bucket or tub with water. Container seedlings can be planted throughout the season.

You can plant into single wells or, which is sometimes easier to make, into a groove. The groove should be twice as wide and twice as deep as the root ball of the seedlings. Loosen the bottom of the hole / groove with a rake and mix the selected soil with compost.Plants are planted and filled in, a kind of a water basin is created around the trunk.Mulch the root ball, e.g.bark or gravel. After planting, the plants should be watered profusely, even in humid weather. The absorbing water will make the soil clods stick to the roots better.

Root-root cuttings planted in autumn should be pruned only in spring. Shorten the shoots by about a third of their length, thanks to which they will bush nicely - the hedge will thicken. If we do not trim the plants, we will get a thin hedge, stripped from the bottom.Remember that well-branched shrubs are cut weaker than those that are poorly branched (for example, they have only a few long shoots). In the following years, the hedge should be regularly trimmed, even twice a year; the first time at the end of February, the second time in summer.

Basic hedge profiles

1.Trapezoidguarantees relatively good sunlight on the entire height of the hedge, This shape is universal, it can be recommended for all plants

2.Cuboidis recommended for shade-loving and shade-tolerant plants such as yew, hornbeam and beech. This form is not suitable, among others for thuja and cypress trees

3.Archis mainly preferred when the hedge is planted with bushy plants such as ligusters, barberry or laurel leaves. The arch should slightly widen downwards, so that the light also reaches the lowest leaves. We start the forming cutting with cutting the sides, we only carry the scissors in the vertical plane - from top to bottom, and then from bottom to top.
