Planting and breeding dahlias

Dahlia tubers can be placed in containers at the beginning of April. The sooner you start doing it, the faster the plants will bloom. It is important to keep the pots first in a greenhouse or winter garden where there is no frost.Check the tubers carefully before planting.

If they are mutilated, rot, or covered with mold, it is better to discard them. On the other hand, dry roots should not be planted, so it is good to soak them for 2-3 hours in a water bath at 15ºC.Thanks to this the dormant eyes will start to bounce.

For planting, we use fresh soil for balcony flowers with a well-balanced nutrient content. We do not use soil from the garden under any circumstances! At the beginning, water the plants in moderation, so that the substrate is only slightly moist. As the green mass increases, gradually increase the amount of water.

We can put the containers on the terrace in mid-May. From the end of April, the tubers are planted directly into the ground. Choose a sunny position with humus soil for cultivation.Plant the tubers to a depth of 10 centimeters.

Dahlias reproduction by division

Large tubers can be divided before planting, this is the easiest way to get new plants. However, not the most effective, as it allows obtaining only a few cuttings, provided that the mother tuber is large enough. You have to remember that there should be at least one well-developed bud on each separated carp.

It is much more efficient to pick up shoots (cuttings). In this way, we can get up to 10 descendants from one plant. We plant the tubers for seedling in February. The dahlias obtained in this way should be planted in the garden around mid-May.

Vegetative reproduction is more reliable than sowing seeds . It is known then that we will get plants the same as those whose tubers were used for reproduction. Plants obtained from seeds may not repeat maternal characteristics.
