While blue or red flowers fade with the last rays of the sun, white and pastel flowers begin to glow with full force. From a distance, it looks as if small lanterns are burning in the flowerbeds or the water is reflecting the starry sky. This is one of the most beautiful spectacles of nature.
Plants attracting night insects
After sunset, when the heat of the day subsides and the evening silence falls over the garden, you can fully rest. The darkness of the night will illuminate us with lanterns of white, yellow and pink flowers, transforming the garden into a romantic, fairy-tale land in which beautiful plants play the role of elves.Flowers with muted colors are not very visible during the day and do not play the role of foreground plants. However, after dark, they not only become more visible, but also often begin to release beautiful fragrances. Thus, they lure many insects active at night into the garden, which carry pollen and cause pollination of flowers. A wave of intense fragrances, made up of notes of various essential oils, spills over the garden all night long and only disappears at dawn.
Fragrant houseplants, perennials and annuals
At night, exotic houseplants smell very beautifully, such as the impressively sized Datura or filigree Cestrum nocturnum. Plants can be placed near the terrace or on the terrace, i.e. close to the place where we spend the most time in the evening. Thanks to this, the air around us fills with a wonderful fragrance. Perennials and annuals such as evening primrose, lemon yellow daylily, evening flower and white ornamental tobacco take on the role of night signposts after dark.Their flowers shine and begin to smell as the sun's disc hides behind the horizon. These inconspicuous-looking plants during the day should be combined in plantings with red, purple or blue flowering species. Thanks to this, we will be able to achieve an interesting contrast, the stronger the sun is warmer. The benefits of such a combination of colors are mutual - plants blooming in dark colors seem even darker, while light ones are easier to see against the background of dark plantings.
Aromatic white flowering plantsWhite flowering ornamental shrubs, such as jasmine, lilac and viburnum, also have all the qualities of night plants. However, they have the advantage over perennials and annuals that they are much larger and look impressive regardless of the time of day or night. Besides, their flowers smell around the clock. Bushes should not be planted in excess, but only a few pieces each, entrusting them with the task of creating a planting structure.Climbers with white flowers, such as the fragrant cream-white variety of the climbing rose 'Bobbie James' or the climbing hydrangea, envelop entire walls of buildings or fencing with flowering shoots. One of the most interesting climbing plants for the night garden is Pomeranian honeysuckle, distinguished by beautiful creamy-yellow and pink-white flowers. Their sweet smell can be felt only in the evening.
