Recipe for the garden: care for bulbous plants

When to plant onion rings?

Is there a difference in planting bulbs in fall and spring. What is the significance of this for each species?

"Onion" is a colloquial name that refers to a group of plants that are propagated by bulbs, tubers and rhizomes. We divide them into spring and autumn depending on the planting date.

Spring bulbs

Bulbs are planted into the ground from April to May. They bloom in summer and often please our eyes until the first frost.Since the "bulbs" are susceptible to freezing, every autumn we dig them out, clean them and store them in a dry and cool room until spring. This group includes the well-known and frequently cultivated: begonia, babiana, bearded dahlia, freesia, g altonia, ixia, incarvilla, ismena, buttercup, calla, canna, crocosmia, lily, gladiolus, nerina, desert, sorrel, tigris, anemone.

Less known but equally beautiful onion representatives are: acidantera, agapanthus, alstromeria, garden amaryllis, arum, bletilla, drakunculus, eukomis, homeria, caladium, turmeric, polianthus, sparaxis, sprekalia, watsonia, zephyranth and planted early in spring for pots and grown at home
- achimenes, eucharis and gloxinia.

Autumn bulbs

They can be put into the ground from August to October. They will bloom from early spring until early summer. Among them, the following deserve special attention, among others scilla, ornamental garlic, ifeon, hyacinth, iris, kamassia, crocus, snowdrop, narcissus, cannaria, winter rann, checkerboard, grape hyacinth, snowflake, snowman, snowstorm, tulip.

Bulbs from this group may stay in one place for 2-3 years . After this period, they should be dug out, cleaned of growths and diseased and deformedremoved. Then we select the good-looking specimens and plant them anew, supplementing, of course, with new species and varieties.

Which flowers should be chosen for the discount?

I would like to create a colorful bed of bulbs that bloom on different dates. What species should I plant?

Bulb plants are characterized by a multitude of colors and shapes of flowers, different flowering dates and - most importantly - easy and reliable cultivation.Choosing different species and varieties, we can have colorful beds from early spring to late autumn.I give examples of plants, taking into account their colors and flowering months.

- At the turn of February and March, white snowdrops and blizzards appear, as well as winter farms with yellow, fragrant flowers.

- In March and April, flower beds will be dominated by white, yellow, purple or blue crocuses (smooth or striped), sapphire or white Siberian squirrels and blue or light pink snowballs. The listed plants grow up to 20 cm, so they look beautiful on rockeries, low flower beds or near conifers.

- Yellow and orange narcissus (IV / V) and multicolored tulips (V / VI) must not be missing in the spring bed, which will enliven every corner.

- Dahlias with large, multicolored flowers, gladioli, which also look beautiful in a vase, and begonias, with which we can also decorate balcony boxes, will bloom throughout the summer (July-September).

However, I encourage you to experiment on your own in the selection of bulbous plants.

What is worth remembering when planting plants in the ground?

Are there any rules I should know about when I am planting seedlings?

Seedlings of flowers and vegetables should be planted in the second half of May. Then there should be no more frosts. Water the seedlings abundantly 2-3 hours before planting. The seedlings should be placed on previously prepared beds, remembering to keep the appropriate distances for individual species and varieties.

As for the planting technique, it is worth making a vertical hole with a special peg and place the seedling in such a way that the roots do not curl. If they are too long, gently shorten them. Then stick the peg diagonally next to the hole and straighten it towards the seedlings.

In this way, we will press the soil to the roots along their entire length. Backfill the groove, gently kneading the soil around the plant.Remember to plant the seedlings as deep as they grew in the pot - that is, to a bright spot on the root collar. Only when it is strongly grown can we put it a little deeper.

At the end, we water the planted plant abundantly, trying not to wet its leaves. Work is best done on cloudy days or in the evening - never in full sun.

What is the best seedling?

Please tell me what to look for when buying a seedling.

When buying seedlings, make sure that:

- stocky, not too exaggerated,

- has a strong, thick, stiff and non-wilted stem with a minimum of 3-5 leaves,

- leaves and stems are green and he althy - no visible damage or signs of disease,

- the root ball together with the soil are not too dense or dry,

When we buy seedlings for vegetables without soil, such as leeks and celery, let's check if the root system is well-developed, undamaged and he althy (bright roots). It is also worth asking the seller about the characteristics of the variety, e.g. harvest dates or flower color.
