Practical Gardener: a sociable gamekeeper anemone

Flowers in the house: plant beads

Nertera coral Nertera granadensis has ornamental fruit. This short plant with delicate, leafy shoots is now dormant, but will be covered with greenish-white flowers in April. Orange, yellow, or creamy white berries the size of a pea will grow.

They can decorate plants for up to 3 or 4 months. The condition is to provide the nether with proper cultivation conditions, especially moderate temperature.During rest, from October to February, the temperature should be 10-12 ° C. It guarantees abundant flowering and fruiting in the next season. Nertera is grown in a bright but not direct sunlight.

In spring and summer, the substrate should be moist, in winter we limit watering. Abundant nitrogen fertilization should be avoided so as not to stimulate vegetative growth.Nertera looks best in flat bowls, especially when we compose specimens with different fruit colors.

Ornamental garden: social gamekeeper anemone

Wood anemone Anemone nemorosa is a native groundcover perennial that grows with thickened rhizomes. It grows to a height of 10-20 cm and has an unbranched stem, ending in one white flower. There are also varieties with beautiful pink flowers: 'Rosea' and 'Allenia', rose-lilac - 'Robonsoniana' or lilac - 'Royal King' and varieties with full flowers, white, such as 'Vestal' and full white-green like 'Green Fingers'. Wood anemone blooms profusely in early spring, and its cultivars a little later (IV-V).

Plants look best in larger groups between trees and shrubs in naturalistic gardens. They can also be planted in shaded places on rockeries and among ferns or, for example, funky trees.Wood anemone likes a fairly fertile, humus-free and non-acidic soil with varying humidity: moist in spring, and moderately dry in summer, when it goes dormant. It is easy to reproduce by dividing rhizomes and seeds.

Trees and shrubs in February

Physiological drought

Particular attention should be paid to evergreen shrubs, which under the influence of increasingly warmer sun rays can stimulate the transpiration process, which leads to physiological drought.

We plant hedges

If the weather is good, we can use this time to plant a new hedge. We need to know whether the bushes are to be led to low margins or to serve as a tall green screen. This is important because the height of a hedge is greatly influenced by plant developmental features, especially growth force, which means that not everyone the species can be set to the desired height.

Vegetable: basil all summer long

If we want to pick basil all summer long, we have to drive it sooner. It takes 8 to 10 weeks from sowing to the first harvest.

Important: plants need space. The seedlings are interrupted when they develop 4 pairs of leaves. We leave the herbs in the open air only when the danger of night frosts is over (basil is a thermophilic plant), grafted varieties are new, and therefore also more fertile, from the Baristo series, like 'Grande', 'Rosso' and 'Greco'.These perform best in sheltered and sunny locations.

To ensure an uninterrupted harvest, always tear off the tops of the shoots. In older plants, also tear off the main leaves from the next two branches.
