Practical Gardener: mini rock gardens that are easy to grow

Table of contents

In the hot summer, mini rockeries work well on sunny balconies. They are best grown in large, flat, stone troughs or bowls.Ceramic cactus makers are also good.Plastic or metal containers are better not to use, because they get hot and the soil in them dries up too much.

For the same reason, avoid very dark dishes and very small cups or pots, which do not protect the plant roots from drying out.We should not have problems with choosing plants, because the offer of gardeners is very big.The reliable and charming at the same time are Sempervivum swarms - rosette perennials of various shades of green, brown and maroon.

What kinds of rockeries are the most resistant to drought and unfavorable weather conditions?

The rock garden is an interesting element, willingly added to the home garden. In principle, it is supposed to reflect mountain areas that are difficult to access and not very fertile, so it is often created in sunny places with an uneven surface. Such terrain is not conducive to easy access to water, so when planning a rockery, it is worth reaching for species originating from mountainous or dry regions (semi-arid and desert). Among rock plants, many varieties of sedum and swarm are particularly fond of sunny places and are resistant to drought. And there is a lot to choose from, because plants can differ in virtually everything within the species: size, habit, shape, flowers. In difficult conditions, a dioecious anemone will also work very well.

- says Dr. Eng. Tomasz Mróz

Sedum sedum plants are also excellent, represented by a huge number of species and varieties, differing not only in color, shape and size of the leaves, but also in flower color and flowering time.Good company for them there will be perennials such as Saxifraga saxifrages, Thymus thymus, Lavandula lavender and seasonal plants such as purslane or mesemeb.

These plants are very resistant to drought, but remember, when grown in containers, they require watering, especially in summer heat. Before planting, you need to choose a suitable substrate, which should consist of sand, peat and compost or garden soil, and prepare a drainage of pebbles, coarse gravel or expanded clay.
