In the garden, an ideal position for them will be the close edges of trees and shrubs, especially deciduous ones. Why? Snowdrops grow best in diffused light, in humus and fertile soil (fallen leaves of trees provide humus), which retains high humidity in early spring.
At the end of spring, the shrubs draw the most water, draining the soil around the snowdrop bulbs, but then it is beneficial for them as they dormant early.
Snowdrops grow beautifully in the same place for over a dozen years, provided that in autumn we spread fertile compost around them. They are multiplied by separating incoming bulbs, as well as from seeds that spread easily by themselves, which is also helped by the ants spreading the seeds around the garden.
In Poland, snowdrops are most common in the south - in the mountains and in Lower Silesia (Image: Adobe Stock) |
The plants are best transplanted after flowering, when they still have leaves. And if we do not have snowdrops in the garden yet, we buy bulbs in September and plant them at a depth of 6 centimeters with intervals of 5 10 centimeters in several clusters.
In the garden, snowdrops can grow in smaller or larger homogeneous groups, e.g. against the background of a lawn, or in the company of crocuses, ranchers, and liverworts. A beautiful colorful composition can be created, which will be a real decoration of the garden, when most of the flowers are still asleep.
Carp review
We review stored dahlia carp, gladioli tubers, crocosmia and begonias, gallonia onions, hymenoptera and others. We check that they do not dry out too much, and if necessary, moisten the substrate (sand, peat, sawdust),
in which they are stored.Infected by diseases or damaged we remove.
We remove snow
We break up the snow crust on lawns to prevent the growth of snow mold on plants. We knock down too thick a layer of snow (especially during the thaw) from the columnar forms of coniferous shrubs so that they do not break apart.
Winter cover on discounts
We check if the winter coat sticks well in the discounts. If necessary, add some coniferous twigs, dry leaves or straw.
