Planting plants above ground level is a good idea. The flowers are then better displayed. And here are the additional advantages of the increased discount:
- facilitated plant care,
- creating optimal soil conditions for given groups of flowers,
- arrangement of a place next to a wall or fence,
- controlling perennial growth.
We prepared our discount together with my husband within three days. Here are some tips on how to build it.
Choose a positionBefore starting work, choose a place. We plan higher beds where they will be limited on one side, e.g. by a building wall, wall or fence.
Discount dimensionsThen we set the discount size. Its height depends on our needs, preferences and the terrain in the garden. Just remember that the higher it is, the more solid its sides should be. In turn, the width of the discount depends on whether it will be accessed from all sides (then it may be wider), or whether it will be limited on one side (e.g. by a wall). In the latter case, it should not exceed 80 cm, so that we can easily get to all the plants.
Materials neededWe can make the casing of the discount from ready-made elements. We chose concrete lawns. Bricks or ordinary stones will work just as well. For construction, we can also use less durable, but more natural wooden elements - polished and painted boards, vertically attached railway sleepers or rollborders.To strengthen wooden structures, connect the corner walls from the inside. The edges of the rebate should be sunk into the ground so that the structure is not damaged under the pressure of the ground. In the case of lawns, this treatment is unnecessary. We place them flush with the ground.
Construction step by step
The course of works can be summarized in several points.
1. We remove the top layer of soil (turf).
2. We build a border.
3. Loosen the soil.
4. We spread a fine mesh that will protect against moles, trying to overlap the walls of the rebate. Remember to insulate from the building.
5. Put the plant remains (without seeds) - the turf upside down.6. We fill the bed with a mixture of garden soil enriched with compost, peat and sand. We tread the ground well and water it. Wait until it settles slightly before sowing or planting.
Planting plants
Increased bed allows you to grow plants with specific soil preferences.In a limited space, it is easier to create such conditions. It looks great when composed of flowers of different
shape and height. We can also plant fast-growing, single or perennial climbers on such a discount. Just remember that they will need a support.
Nothing stands in the way of vegetables (root, leafy) or herbs (e.g. lavender, mint, lovage, dill, basil) among the plants you plant. We have a few lawns for parsley, basil and perennial chives. Thanks to this, I always have greens at hand. Perennials are also a great idea, especially those that winter in the ground. By choosing them, you will save time on planting plants each year. It is also worth planning the rebate so that it blooms from spring to autumn.
