PiO: wintering plants in the pond

Table of contents

P:What plants can be planted in the underwater zone in the ponds set up in home gardens?

O:Plantszones submersiblehave less ornamental significance than other species. Their main role is the extraordinary ability to oxygenate water, not only during summer, but alsoalso in winterThese plants, as they grow larger, absorb a large amount of biogenic elements , e.g. leftoversuneaten food for fishand their faeces, which cause excessive algae growth. In this way, they ensurebiological balanceinof the eye of water

The expansiveness of these species is a big problem, because during theone seasonthey may become overgrown with a small body of water. However, you can deal with this by removingsystematically excess shoots .

The most important species are:

-Elodea canadensis, which grows in water from 10 cm to 1.5 m deep, its stems can reach 3 m in length, small flowers,purple-green,visible above the water;

- rigid tollerCeratophyllum demersum growing in water at a depth of 25 cm to 1.5 m, spreading indefinitely;

-whorlMyriophyllum verticillatum grows in water at a depth of 10-60 cm, shoots grow up to 2-3 m long, in summer producespink lubyellowish inflorescencesprotruding above the water surface;

-water mossFontinalis antipyretica, for which the water depth does not matter, individual shoots are 50 cm long;

-lake lobeliaDortmann lobelia that grows in water at a depth of 10 to 60 cm, shoots reach about 60 cm long, produceslilac in summer inflorescencesprotruding above the water surface;

-rdestnica piercedPotamogeton perfoliatus growing in water at a depth of 10 to 60 cm, shoots grow to about 1 m, inflorescences inconspicuous, protruding above the water surface in summer;

-swamp colonHottonia palustris growing in water at a depth of 30 to 60 cm,delicate shoots, inflorescences appear in spring.

Q:How should water oxygenating plants in a pond or pond be overwintering?

O:Underwater plants include species that act as oxygenators, such asmarsh kanadianElodea canadensis,tolls stiffCeratophyllum demersum,verticillatum okółkowyMyriophyllum verticillatum andrdestnicePotamogeton. As these plants grow in size during the season, some of them should be harvested in autumn. The effective number of these plants is 5 pcs per msquare meterfor the first 10 square meters of water surface and 3 pcs per square meter for every 10 square meters thereafter.

In the winter, the leaves of these plants usually die, overwintering in the form ofrhizomes( rdestnice ) or dormantbuds( marsh ,tolls ) or other creations.If, for some reason, the pond has to be inin winter without water , the wintering parts of these plants should be kept infrost-free room(0-5º C) in wet sand.
