The group of ornamental grasses includes dozens of species and hundreds of varieties that differ in terms of habit, strength of growth, decorative leaves and inflorescences as well as plant durability after the end of the growing season.Among the most rapidly growing species, the Chinese miscanthus from Southeast Asia attracts attention.
It is a magnificent tufted perennial growing up to 3-4 m in nature. Although in the climatic conditions of Poland this grass is smaller, it still remains one of the tallest perennials, and the soaring, picturesque clumps arouse the interest of plant lovers. Due to the growing popularity of miscanthus, new varieties appear on the market every year.
Welcome to the magical world of grasses
One of the most interesting, newest forms with two-color, golden spotted leaves is 'Mysterious Maiden'. It was appreciated by the jury of the Plant Novelties Competition of the international exhibition "Green is Life" in 2014, which awarded it with a silver medal. The plant was entered into the competition by the Douglas Fir Ornamental Plant Nursery.
Chinese miscanthus 'Mysterious Maiden' creates straight, slim and compact clumps of a vase-like shape, narrower at the bottom, and wide at the top. The variety grows quite quickly, reaching about 1.5 m in height in mid-summer. A characteristic feature of the plant are long, regularly tapering and arched green leaves, in places dotted with a mosaic of yellow spots. At the end of summer, soaring, paniculate, copper-colored inflorescences emerge from among the leaf fountain.Panicles are initially compact, then open and become fluffy. During this period, the plants look extremely interesting. Plants decorate the garden until late autumn and in winter, when the dried blades are sprinkled with snow.
Miscanthus give the gardens lightness, create a friendly atmosphere and unique character. Planted in home gardens, they bring a touch of the Orient. The rustling of leaves or the swaying of the blades in the wind have a calming effect, ensuring pleasant relaxation.High clumps of Chinese miscanthus look more beautiful when planted individually and in compositions with other species of grass.
Low requirements, easy care and low maintenance costs encourage planting these grasses in parks, housing estates, near water reservoirs and in the surroundings of modern urban architecture. An interesting effect is created by large group plantings.
Chinese miscanthus prefers fertile soils with a slightly acidic or neutral pH, sunny, secluded and sheltered positions.Constantly moist soil guarantees fast, lush growth, but dry or wet places should definitely be avoided. In the first year of cultivation, it is worth securing the plants for winter. It is best to cover the grass clumps with bark, sawdust, leaves or straw. In spring, the mounds have to be removed, and last year's dried-up shoots should be cut low to the ground. A universal compound fertilizer can be spread around the plants.
Chinese miscanthus and its varieties tolerate soil and air pollution as well as high soil salinity.Durability and longevity are other advantages of most miscanthus.Plants planted in one place grow well and keep their nice habit for many years.
