How to protect plants for the winter

Table of contents

Winter is a difficult period for container plants left outside. In a small volume of the substrate, their root system is particularly prone to freezing. Therefore, the pots should be protected against frost by wrapping them, for example, with non-woven fabric or bubble foil. You can also use materials of natural origin, such as straw or jute. Another way to cover the lagging is to put the pots in larger containers. The space between them is filled with insulating material, but in such a way that no water can get there or it can drain away quickly. Prune plants also require special protection. The tree crown is also protected against frost, along with the place of vaccination. The best for this purpose is an agrotextile. The deadline for the performance of the security is important. It cannot be done too early, when the plants have not yet sunk well to dormancy, so you should carefully monitor the temperature course every year. We protect the plants only when the temperature drops below -2, -3 ° C for several nights.

INDOOR PLANT WINTERINGPlants sensitive to frost, such as fuchsia, geraniums, oleanders, bougainvillea, mugs, myrtles, laurels or citrus trees, are moved to rooms with a temperature of 5-12 ° C, in depending on the species. We must provide light for species that are always green, and whose leaves also last through the winter, while others may winter in the dark. We strongly reduce watering of plants to prevent them from overflowing and rotting.

TRIM THE SHOOTS AND DIGO UP THE TUBERSIf the weather has allowed us to enjoy the flowers of tuber begonias, crocosmia or beadworms, it's high time to trim their shoots and dig up the underground organs, clean them and store them indoors for winter at a temperature of 8-12 ° C.

WE PREPARE THE BALCONY FOR WINTERWe organize the pots and boxes. Remove dried plants or those that will not overwinter. As most of the containers are not resistant to frost, we empty them from the ground and hide them in the basement.

WE WATER GREEN PLANTSPlants whose leaves remain for winter transpire water even at very low temperatures, which makes them particularly vulnerable to water deficiency. That is why we constantly water the always green species wintering outside. During the winter, we also do this during the thaw. We must protect such plants all winter from the wind, which increases transpiration.

Protection

WE PREPARE COVERSWe protect plants sensitive to freezing against autumn and winter cold. For this purpose, we use various types of natural materials (straw, sticks, hay) or artificial (agrotextile, foil, mats).

WE REMOVE PLANT REMAINSFallen leaves must be removed, and all plant debris must be removed from the flower beds, as they are very often a wintering place for fungi and bacteria.

WATCHING ROOM FLOWERSIn winter, you should observe indoor plants more carefully than usual. They are exposed to attacks by pests, such as mealybugs, spider mites, thrips, whiteflies and many other species.

BEFORE WE COVER THE ROSE BUSHESBefore covering the roses for the winter, remove the affected shoots and fallen leaves.

SPRAY THE LEAVES OF FRUIT TREESBefore the expected frost, spray the leaves of apple and pear trees with a 5% solution of urea. In this way, we can prevent two serious diseases - apple and pear scab.
