Periwinkle silhouetteThe form of periwinkle growthPeriwinkle - positionDye careThe common periwinkle and the greater periwinkle are found in the Polish flora mainly in deciduous forests. They are pretty, durable ground cover plants for shady places and are perfect for planting within the crown of woody plants. They perform very well in combination with tall perennials for shade, such as tawułka, foxglove, geranium and aconite.
The common periwinkle and the greater periwinkle keep their leaves throughout the year. Both species form long stolons and quickly spread over large areas of land.Periwinkle shoots become woody, therefore it should be included among shrubs within woody plants.
However, due to its modest height (in the case of the common periwinkle approx. 10 cm, and the larger periwinkle - 20-30 cm), we list it in the group of perennials. Both species bloom, and flowers appear between April and May. In the larger periwinkle, they are slightly larger.
It is worth paying attention to the 'Variegata' variety, which produces pretty flowers and is also decorated with attractive white and yellow leaves with a trim.Popular varieties of the common periwinkle are m. in 'Alba' (white, very large flowers), 'Azurea Plena' (blue, full) and 'Multiplex' (purple red, full).
Periwinkle feels best in loose, fertile soil in places covered by the shadow zone cast by deciduous trees and shrubs. The greater periwinkle likes warmer and drier places, e.g. the fringes of tree and shrub plantings. The common periwinkle grows also in cool and wet places.
In the fall, we spread a thin layer of mature compost within our crops. In areas haunted by severe winters, the Greater Periwinkle shrubs are covered with leaves. Both species can be easily propagated by division or cuttings.
