To understandwhy we can grow worm-free cherries from early cultivars , it is worth briefly getting to know the life cycle of the weevil seed beetle. This pest hibernates in the ground, pupates there, and around mid-May young flies fly out. At the turn of May and Junethey lay their eggs in ripening cherry fruitsHowever, this date may vary from year to year, depending on the weather. After about two weeks, the larvae hatch from the eggs and feed in the cherry fruit. In the case of early cherry varieties, there is a chance that the insect will not be able to lay eggs on them
Here are the top 4cherry varieties that we usually grow worm-free :
Cherry RIVAN- very early variety. It is distinguished by abundant yield, high resistance to frost and low susceptibility to bacterial cancer - a disease that attacks cherries very often. In favorable weather, the fruits can be harvested at the turn of May and June.So we have a chance to collect them before the seedling lays eggs in the fruit. It isby far the best cherry variety, the fruit of which will almost always be worm-free
Cherry RANNAJA ROZOVINKA- early cherry variety, ripening at a similar date as Rivan. However, it did not gain popularity in Poland due to the susceptibility to cracking and rotting of sweet cherry fruits on the tree. If someone decides to grow this variety, I suggest spraying with the ecological Lecitec preparation, which strengthens cell membranes, making the peel of sweet cherry fruits less susceptible to cracking and the penetration of fungal diseases.
Cherry BURLAT- it is an early variety, but later than Rivan. We will harvest the fruits of the Burlat cherries about 2 weeks after the Rivan, in the third week of the cherry ripening. Usually this is at the end of the first half of June. The fruits of the Burlat variety are very tasty and much larger, but prone to cracking in rain. However, at least one Burlat is worth planting, becausewill be an excellent pollinator for Rivancherries and will allow us to extend the harvest period. The chance that the cherries will be without worms is still high: -)
Cherry KARESOVA- sometimes also called 'Karesova Rana', ripens on the same date as Burlat and produces similar quality fruit, but much less prone to cracking in rain. At the same time, it yields regularly and abundantly. This varietyshould be chosen for planting instead of the Burlat variety in areas with high rainfall , e.g. in Podkarpacie. It is especially recommended for amateur cultivation in home and allotment gardens.
