Chinese rose(Hibiscus rosa-sinensis), also known ashibiscusorketmia, belongs to the family Malvaceae, or mallow (this family also includes mallow, known to gardeners).Home-grown Chinese roseshould not be confused with its garden sister, the Syrian hibiscus, also known as garden hibiscus (Hibiscus syriacus).
Chinese roseis an excellent houseplant. Although its unusually large flowers last only for a day or two, with the correctcultivation of Chinese rose at homewe can ensure the continuity of flowering (flowers will develop day after day) from May to October . The flowers are usually large, with different colors depending on the variety - purple, red or white, single-colored or mottled, with attractive stamens connected into a tube.
It is worth knowing thatChinese rose (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis), referred to as home hibiscusis often confused with a plant called Syrian hibiscus, referred to as garden hibiscus. The cultivation requirements and purpose of both plants are completely different. Thereforewhen choosing home hibiscus, pay attention not to get confused and not to buy garden hibiscus
Home growing hibiscus
Chinese roselikes the sun, but the light should be diffused. The southern exposure will be ideal for this plant (but not on the windowsill, right next to the window - let the plant stand about 1 m away), west or south-west (here it can stand on the windowsill). In summer, you can put a Chinese rose outside, for example on a terrace, but it must be a slightly shaded (semi-shaded) place. At the same time, remember to protect the plant against sunburn on extremely hot days. Hibiscus leaves turn pale in too strong light, and in too shadowy places the plant blooms poorly.
Important! When growing hibiscus, it is not allowed to change its place, e.g. to move it from one window sill to another. This can cause flower buds to drop.
Growing temperature of home hibiscus
The plant prefers warmth. In summer it feels best in the temperature of about 20 ° C, it can withstand temperatures up to 27 ° C. For the winter, from November to January, place the hibiscus in a cooler place, with a temperature of 15 to 18 ° C. During this time, the Chinese rose goes into a dormant period. As the temperature drops, you should also limit watering and refrain from fertilizing.
Air humidity in hibiscus cultivation
Air humidity in Chinese rose cultivation should be quite high, so it is worth sprinkling the plant with a diffused stream of water, preferably with loose water. Remember, however, that the plants should never be sprinkled when the leaves are warm from the sun, because it may cause sunburn.

Watering a Chinese rose
Chinese rose caregrown at home requires proper watering of this plant. From spring to summerwatering hibiscusshould be quite abundant. Let's keep the soil moist, but not wet. Since November, as the temperature drops, we also limit watering (then we usually water it not more often than once every two weeks).
Fertilizing Chinese rose
Proper fertilization is also very important inChinese rose cultivationat home. Without this treatment, the plant will not be able to produce a large amount of flowers.Hibiscus fertilizationstarts in spring when flower buds appear, then continue throughout the flowering period. Fertilize every week with a multi-component fertilizer for flowering plants, dissolved in water for irrigation. The dosage should be adjusted according to the instructions on the fertilizer packaging. We limit fertilization in autumn, and from November to January, during the dormant period, we do not fertilize the plants at all.
Transplanting homemade hibiscus
A Chinese rose that is grown at home should be transplanted every spring in the spring. Usually, a good substrate for hibiscus is potting soil, which can be purchased at a flower shop. The ideal soil for hibiscus is clay with an admixture of peat and sand, with a pH of 5.7-6.8.
Cutting Chinese Rose
Hibiscusrequires pruning for proper branching and abundant flowering.Cutting the Chinese roseshould be done in late winter, when the plant is still dormant. You can also prune hibiscus when transplanting. During this procedure, the shoots are shortened by about half of their length.
Hibiscus reproduction
The propagation of the Chinese roseat home is carried out by rooting semi-woody apical cuttings with 2-3 leaves in the spring. Before planting, the ends of the cuttings are dipped in the rooting agent and then placed in a light peat substrate (e.g. a mixture of peat and sand). The seedlings should be provided with a high temperature of about 25 ° C. They should take 3 weeks to root.
Incorrect growing conditions often causehibiscus diseasesor encourage the appearance of pests.
Too moist a substrate may lead to rotting of the root ball andChinese rose leaves fall Drying out the root ball, too cold or too humid air can lead to shedding flower buds. Too dry soil can also cause the edges of Chinese rose leaves to curl. The edges of the flower petals turn brown and then blacken when the plant is sprayed with too much sunlight or too cold water.
Whitish or reddish patcheson hibiscus flowers and young shoots indicate that the plant is attacked by gray mold. Then we give up spraying the plants and spray them with Biosept 33 SL (0.1% concentration), Rovral Flo 255 SC (0.2% concentration) or Teldor 500 SC (0.1%). The spraying should be repeated.
Ifhibiscus leavesdevelop brown-purple spots, and then the leaves die off, this indicates alternaria. In this case, the above-mentioned preparation Rovral Flo 255 SC or Gwarant 500 SC or Folpan 80 WG (0.2%) can be used.
Too dry air favors the appearance ofhibiscus pestssuch as: aphids, mealybugs and spider mites.
Spider mites on the Chinese rosecan be recognized by yellow spots on the leaves and cobwebs on the underside of the leaves. Then, use Karate Zeon 050 CS at a concentration of 0.05% (5 ml per 10 liters of water). Another way is to put the sticks Provado Combi Pin or BR Shieldmaker in the ground, but you have to wait a while for their action (the substances contained in the sticks get to the ground, from here to the roots of the plants, then circulate in the plant tissues, from where they are sucked by pests, and this everything lasts up to several weeks).
" Wełnowki on hibiscuscan be recognized by the whitish flocs at the base of the petioles. We can also combat them with Provado Combi Pin or BR shielding sticks. "
Aphids, on the other hand, form colonies of small, usually green bugs, most often on young leaves, stems, flower buds and flowers. In the place where the aphids feed, the leaves can discolor and distort, and are often covered with sticky secretion of aphids - honey dew.We fight aphids by spraying with any aphicidal preparation.
Remember that when spraying any of the above-mentioned preparations for diseases and pests (except Biosept), the plant should be exposed outside, because these preparations are harmful to people and must not be used in homes. As an alternative to chemical plant protection products, the natural and safe-to-use Agrocover Spray can be used to combat all the above-mentioned pests and gray mold - it is a ready-to-use solution in a spray bottle. In my opinion, this is the best method for pests found on potted flowers, possible to use in home growing conditions.
