The natural habitats of the climbing hydrangea are in Japan, Korea and China, from where it was brought. It is characterized by white canopy-shaped inflorescences appearing in June and July. They reach up to about 25 cm in diameter, making them a great decoration of the garden. In the fall, the green leaves turn yellow, while the shoots are rust-colored with peeling bark.

Among climbing hydrangeas, we distinguish three most important varieties, which differ mainly in height, color and shades of the leaves. Choose the one that is most suitable for your garden and the position you want to devote to planting in.
This variety is known for its relatively slow growth - it finally reaches 3-4 m in height. It has delicate, green leaves with a silvery border - hence the name "silver" - silver. The flowers are white - they bloom in late June and early July. It is quite demanding when it comes to soil - it must be fertile, moist and acidic.Unlike other varieties, this one needs a shaded or semi-shaded position to develop properly. It climbs using incoming roots on walls, trees andcheckered supportsmade of plastic or wood.
This is a miniature variety thatgrows up to 1.5m in heightfor the entire period of growth (around 10-15cm each year). Dwarf Climbing Hydrangea has round, glossy leaves on the top, and a dull white-green underside. It blooms from June to July - the flowers are fragrant, with a white, expressive shade. It prefers fertile, moist and acidic soil. Like Silver Lining, it likes semi-shade locations where it grows properly. It is also a ground cover plant ideal for rock gardens or small spaces. Its main advantages are frost resistance and high resistance to diseases and pests.
The plant is most often recognized by its characteristic leaves with yellow trim. It is a frost-resistant variety that prefers moist and acidic soils. Insolation should be moderate, and the place should be bright and spacious. Plantings can be planned against the walls - in this case it is important to install a support in the form of a wall with wooden or plastic grids. Reaches up toabout 6m in height , with an annual growth of about 1m.

This variety is highly resistant to pests. Additionally, it is frost-resistant. It was carefully selected in Japan. It has green leaves with a cream-white border with a serrated tip. The plant measures 4-6 m, with an annual growth of about 0.5-1 m. The ideal substrate must be acidic and moist for proper development. The place should be bright, butmoderate sunlightClimbing hydrangea blooms at the turn of June and July - white, cream flowers perfectly serve as a decorative element in the garden, as well as a ground cover plant.
The position where you place the plant should be sheltered from the wind with moderate sunlight. It works best in semi-shaded and shady places, where it blooms long and profusely.Needs fertile soil with a slightly acidic pH, although it also tolerates calcareous soils.
Hydrangea should have a constantly moist soil, because - especially in the first years after planting - it cannot stand drought. Young plants should be watered regularly in hot weather, otherwise they will become ill. This creeper hibernates well in Polish climatic conditions.
The most convenient planting date is early spring or fall, when the plant has already lost its leaves. Summer high temperatures make it difficult for the seedling to take root. The hole should be 3-4 times larger than the pot in which the hydrangea was grown in the nursery. We fill it with well-decomposedcompost soil orpeat substrate mixed with potting soil. After planting, water the plant abundantly and mulch the soil around it.
This prevents weeds from sprouting, keeps the soil moisture constant and regulates the temperature of the substrate (in summer it protects them from the sun and prevents overheating).Unfortunately, we won't see flowers in the first season. As a rule, the first flower buds are formed by a hydrangea 4-5 years after planting.
We can easily obtain beautiful cuttings from several-year-old climbing hydrangeas - cut a woody shoot and divide it into 10-15 cm long sections with 2-3 knots, which we root in slightly acidic soil. However, a more convenient method of breeding this creeper is to make splits. Side shoots are bent to the ground, fixed with wire and covered with soil. They take root after a few weeks. In the spring of the following year, they are cut off and transplanted to a new place.
Hydrangea shoots reach up to 20 m in length. During one season it can grow from 0.5 (in the first years after planting) to 1 m (in the following years). The climber climbs using short adventitious roots that stick strongly torough surfacesFor this reason, it is best to plant them under tall trees (the roots grow into the crevices of the bark without harming the tree) or on solid trees. fences and walls.
You should not backfill walls covered with old, cracked plaster with hydrangea, as it will not support the weight of the plant and will fall off with it after some time. If we plant the hydrangea in a place where it will not find supports, it will not exceed 2 m in height, but it will grow wide.
