Budleja is a shrub sensitive to low temperatures Unfortunately, the shrubs freeze often and although the shoots usually bounce off the undamaged ground parts, it happens that the whole plant has been damaged by frost and young shoots do not grow, which could produce flowers in the summer. This applies primarily to young plants. To avoid frost and lack of budlei flowers , it is worth protecting the base of the shrubs against frost with a mound of garden soil or compost.
Budleja needs a specially prepared stand for proper growth and flowering. It should be provided with well-drained soil, fertile and sufficiently moist. She feels best in full sun, sheltered from the wind, or planted against south-facing walls. If budleja grows in the shade and is exposed to winds, it may bloom much less
When growing budley, remember to cut it every year. This treatmentis extremely important for the abundant flowering of budleiTherefore, every year we remove old shoots that have already bloomed. Thanks to this, the plant will sprout new shoots that will bloom profuselyIn early spring, trim all thin, weak growths or damaged budlei shoots just above the ground. The remaining shoots are trimmed to three or four pairs of buds.
Although budleja does not have high fertilization requirements, properly selected fertilizationcan stimulate the plant to more abundant floweringThe complete abandonment of fertilization in the cultivation of budlei may result in impaired growth of the bush and a significant reduction in flowering . That is why it is worth supplementing budley in spring with a multi-component fertilizer for flowering plants.
The second dose of budlei fertilizer is used just before flowering to extend the flowering period, and in the fall it is worth using an autumn fertilizer (without nitrogen, but rich in phosphorus and potassium), which will increase the resistance of budlei to frost.
Good to know!
By removing decaying inflorescences, the plant will produce new flowers. This will extend the flowering period of budlei.
