What flowers do we plant in autumn?

In autumn, plants typical of this season appear in garden stores, such as: common heather, chrysanthemums, autumn asters and Cantabrian dabecja. You can plant them in flowerbeds, baskets or flower pots before entering the house. At this time of the year, we also plant some spring flowering perennials and bulbs.

Until the end of September we can plant peonies and lilies. The bulbs of the tuberous lily and the white lily are planted from the beginning of September. When planting the bulbs of all the lilies, it is worth sprinkling the bottom of the hole with a thick layer of sand, which will protect them from rotting. It is important to plant the lilies before the onset of frost, and cover the bedding during the winter with peat, garden bark or spruce (i.e. conifer branches).
Before the onset of frosts, we should also finish the autumn planting of perennials such as: periwinkle, heart-shaped bergenia, geranium, oakwort, geese, beetle, blaze, speedwell, saxifrage, and cranberry. Another autumn plant is the Lily of the valley. We plant the rhizomes in rows 25 cm apart, in a row every 4 cm. The bud should be 2cm deep.
In autumn, we plant bulbsof plants that bloom in early spring, such as checkers, crocuses, narcissi, tulips and onion irises. Otherflowers planted in autumnare ornamental garlic, anemones, snow flakes, ranches, Himalayan desert flowers, sapphires, buttercups and squill.

For autumn plantingchoose good condition bulbs, that is, large, hard, with no signs of damage caused by pests. It is worth immersing the bulbs in a fungicide solution just before planting, thereby preventing fungal diseases. An important rule that must be followed is the depth of planting bulbs. This rule says that flower bulbs should be planted three times the height of the onion.

Good to know!If you want to protect flower bulbs from rodents, it is best to plant them in plastic casings or wire pots. Next year, the bulbs planted in baskets will also be easier to find and dig up.

The ground around the newly planted plants should be mulched. Composted bark, compost and garden peat are suitable for this purpose. This will protectflowers planted in autumnfrom losing moisture and freezing during the winter.
