Beautiful clematis in pots

Ideas for the arrangement of potted plants and container plants are becoming more and more interesting, therefore, opportunities are being sought to enrich them with other species that will withstand living conditions different from those in the garden. So let's take an interest in clematis. It turns out that many varieties of this beautiful and eagerly cultivated in gardensclimberdevelops very well in containers. They can be moved freely and placed in the best exposed place on the terrace, balcony or at the entrance to the house. Thus, each year, at the beginning of summer, when many varieties are at their peak of development, we can admire their magnificent flowers from close range.

For growing in pots, the most delicate clematis, especially dwarf compact varieties, whose shoots reach a length of no more than 2 meters.Their charm is primarily determined by the long flowering period, and often also unusual forms and colors of flowers. It's hard not to attract attention and admire the cultivar 'Carnaby' with large pink flowers with a darker stripe in the center of each petal. Another attraction is the luxuriantly flowering dwarf variety 'Piilu'. Its flowers are full in the primary flowering period, while later single summer flowers with delicate stripes develop.

If we have a non-freezing winter room, pay attention to more sensitive, easily freezing, but beautiful clematis, such asClematis florida alba plena with greenish-white full flowers or Clematis florida bicolor with full purple flowers.

Perennial climbing plants require support and large containers. The best look is when planted three specimens in one pot with a capacity of at least 40 liters. Suitable supports are bamboo rods, placed in the shape of a tent and tied at the top, as well as ready-made metal grates, 1.8 to 2.0 m long. Plants should be planted in good quality soil for potted plants.

Proper drainage of excess water is ensured by a drainage layer made of expanded clay at the bottom of the container. To prevent the drainage from becoming silted with earth, it should be separated with a piece of agrotextile that will prevent the substrate from washing out. In one pot, we can also try to combine varieties that differ in color or size of flowers.

Clematis are extremely easy to grow

Their care is not complicated and does not cause major problems. The basic treatments in the summer months come down to solid watering and regular fertilization.Since May, we feed the clematis with liquid fertilizer for plants in containers or with a long-lasting preparation. The smallest problems are caused by plants placed in semi-shaded places. The pots should never be exposed to heating by the sun's rays. For this purpose, it is worth planting the climbers with perennials of a compact habit, which will cast a shadow on the root ball, thus keeping it cool.

The plants should be handled carefully and the shoots should not be injured, as wounds are places where the spores of fungal diseases penetrate, e.g.dangerous wilting of the shoots, which can quickly lead to the death of the plant. After noticing the first symptoms of infection, the diseased shoots should be cut radically. The plant usually sprouts new ones quickly.

Cool rooms, where the plants will not be exposed to frost, are suitable for winter quarters for potted clematis. Containers left outside should be carefully covered with insulating material that retains heat, and the ground covered with a thick layer of leaves. In order not to lose their lower leaves, they should be cut at the end of winter.Shoots of flowering varieties twice a season are shortened by half their length. Every year, summer flowering clematis, such as the 'Princess Diana' variety, is pruned very strongly to a height of 20-30 cm above the ground.
