Rose pests

Both flower buds, shoots and leaves are exposed to merciless pests. Familiarize yourself with the pests that can cause the greatest harm to the plant:

Aphids

These are one of the most popular pests that attack roses. We can distinguish 5 types that feed on this plant:

  • rose honey extractor
  • rose-bristle aphid
  • rose grass aphid
  • rose aphid
  • tracer aphid

They are occupied by rose flower buds and leaf buds. They form dense colonies that feed on the plant.Their activity inhibits the growth of shoots, as well as their significant distortion. They have an increased attack at the turn of May and June, so roses should be especially cared for during this period.

Rose Jumper

This is a pest that appears most often at the turn of May until September. A characteristic feature is the silvery stains that appear only on the top layer of the leaves. This happens through the punctures of the larvae and adult insects that feed on the underside of the leaves. After some time the leaves start to turn yellow and finally fall off.

Rose locker

It is a pest that has been feeding on roses since May. Their activity is visible in the form of various-shaped holes formed in the central part of the leaf blade. The characteristic damage they leave behind is the remains of the leaf skeleton. mucosa larvae are easily recognizable - the larvae are yellowish green and covered with black, sticky mucus.

Rosewood scrolls

This is a fairly common pest that feeds on roses in a larval form. It is a night butterfly that, in its previous form, can damage leaves, leading to their curling. The caterpillars have a green coating with a brown head. This way, they camouflage well and are difficult to track at first glance.

Spędziorki

Their activity covers the lower side of the leaves, where you can see characteristic small nets, instruments and also eggs. there are silvery spots on the top layer of leaves, similar to the rose leaf. In the final stage, the leaves die and fall off. Like the aforementioned pest, spider mites attack in late May until September.

In the case of a massive attack of aphids or the activity of a rose jumper, it is worth using preparations that contain deltamethrin that acts in a contact manner. Deltamethrin is one of the fastest-acting insecticides, it starts working after 15 minutes, and the full killing effect is visible after 1 hour.In the case of this substance, we have two preparations to choose from: ready-to-use Deltam AL in the form of a sprayer and Deltam concentrate for dilution with water.

Deltam ALis a ready-to-use agent for protection against pests grown at home, on the terrace, in the ground and under the cover of roses, ornamental plants and vegetables. The preparation fights: aphids, greenhouse whiteflies, caterpillars of butterflies, lilac horsetail, and swarms.

Additional benefits:

  • convenient for the protection of potted plants and those grown on the terrace
  • the active substance is a monoisomer, thanks to which the entire amount of the agent is active - the preparation is very efficient
  • among pyrethroids, deltamethrin is best at fighting pests at higher temperatures

How to reduce the occurrence of fungal diseases on roses?

The key issue in growing roses is proper care and knowledge of several factors that will support our fight for beautiful buds and leaves. First of all, we must remember about the cut adapted to the group and species of roses. In the case of the bushy ones, we use a superficial, slightly translucent cut, while for the bedding ones, we make a cut at the turn of April by about 20-30 cm.

Always remember to protect your roses from unfavorable winter conditions by shielding some of the more sensitive varieties. This is where mounding and traditional agrotextile covering will work. This will allow the shoots of the plant to be protected against freezing and severe weather conditions.

It is worth planting and growing roses with varieties resistant to a specific pathogen. When digging them into the ground, remember about the appropriate spacing of the plants so that they do not appear too close to each other. Here, you should pay attention to the substrate - try to choose compact soils that are not exposed to regular flooding or in the vicinity of wetlands.

One of the most important activities is the use of beneficial biological agents and plant protection products that will quickly get rid of unwanted pests and fungal diseases on roses. It is an inseparable element of rose care that can be performed at the turn of April and May.

Rose diseases and effective treatment

Black spot of roses

This is one of the most burdensome rose diseases that is difficult to deal with. You can easily identify it: brown spots of irregular shape appear on the leaves, which turn black with time. This causes the leaves to wither and die. The shrub dries very quickly - a stronger gust of wind is enough and the leaves fall off in significant amounts. It is important to act in early May to prevent or eradicate the disease.

Powdery mildew

These fungal-like organisms mainly attack young buds, flowers, leaves and rose shoots. A characteristic feature is the white bloom which, with the expansion, covers an increasing area of the plant. The most intense period when it occurs is the turn from May to September.

Downy mildew

In order to identify the harmful activity of organisms belonging to the class of oomycetes, pay attention to whether there are bright yellow spots on the roses, which are quite irregular. As the infected area grows, they turn slightly reddish. Affected leaves fall over time, while irregularly shaped red spots can be seen where there are flower buds. The expansion of this pest is clearly visible in spring and autumn.

Gray mold

It is a fungal disease that most often develops during excessively high air humidity and high temperatures. Especially when we are dealing with a transitional, stormy period, where the earth evaporates strongly. The lack of air circulation among the planted roses also positively influences the development of this disease. This leads to compaction which leads to the trapped moisture being trapped. A noticeable gray coating, quite profuse and expansive, appears both on flower buds, leaves and shoots. It covers almost the entire plant, as a result of which parts of the plant are infected. This leads to their dieback.

Rose rust

It occurs quite often and spreads extremely quickly over the entire surface of the plant. It is characterized by small clusters of yellowish fungus spores located on the underside of leaves and shoots. This causes the leaves to dry out and fall to the ground. The development of the disease can be accelerated by too abundant nitrogen fertilization, which is not advisable.

Most rose fungal diseases can be eliminated with tebuconazole-based agents. This active substance inhibiting the development of the disease, as well as combating the already existing symptoms, owes its excellent intervention effect to the rapid uptake and movement in the plant. Tebuconazole can be found in the preparations Fungimat AL and Fungimat Koncentrat.

Fungimat ALis a ready-to-use fungicide for the protection of soil-grown roses and ornamental plants and for the protection of potted plants. The preparation fights: powdery mildew, black spot and rust.

Fungimat AL. contains two active substances, therefore it works in two directions:

  • trifloxystrobin - creates a protective layer on the surface of the leaves
  • tebuconazole - penetrates the leaves and fights infection from the inside

Additional benefits:

  • the preparation provides long-lasting protection
  • convenient to use - can be used on slightly damp leaves and when it is cooler

  • product resistant to washing by rain
  • provides long-term protection
