Peach leaf curl - ecological control and spraying

Table of contents

Peach leaf curlis one of the most dangerous diseases of peaches and, unfortunately, very common. It is absolutely necessaryto combat leaf frizzHowever, before spraying, find out whatsymptoms of frizz may be confused(hardly anyone talks about it! ) what is the best time to spray, which plant protection products are really effective, and what it looks likeecological treatment of leaf curlyou can read about it all here!

Peach leaf curl - leaf discoloration and deformation

Peach leaf curl - symptoms

The symptoms of frizzare visible mainly on peach leaves. As a result of infection with this disease, the leaves thicken, deformed, are folded and turn carmine-red. Over time, a white mycelium bloom appears on the affected leaves. At the beginning of July, infected leaves die and fall off the tree, which may be aggravated if the summer is hot and dry.
In the case of a very strong infectioncurly peach leavesmay also cause swelling of the cortex of shoots, dying and falling of flowers, as well as the formation of small wounds and yellow-carmine discoloration on the skin of the fruit. Tree growth and yield are significantly reduced.

Note!
Peach leaf curl symptoms are easilyconfused with phosphorus deficiency , which is rarely mentioned. In the case of phosphorus deficiency, the leaves of peaches develop carmine discoloration, very similar to frizz. They are accompanied by necrotic spots appearing on the edges of the leaves, which turn brown and dry over time. As a result of phosphorus deficiency, peach leaves do not undergo such large deformations and folds as in the case of leaf curl. Then, fertilization with phosphorus will be more helpful than spraying with fungicides.

Peach leaf curl - ecological control

Peach leaf curlabsolutely requires combating, as untreated disease will eventually lead to the death of the tree. Spraying against leaf curl is carried out in two dates - in the fall and in the early spring.

In autumn, after leaf fall (usually at the beginning of November), the peaches should be sprayed with copper fungicides such as Miedzian 50 WP or Miedzian Extra 350 SC. The listed copper fungicides are approved for use in organic farming. Moreover, spraying during the leafless period is much less harmful to the environment than spraying during the growing season. And the most important reason - autumn spraying of peach with copper opens up the possibility ofecological treatment of leaf curlin the spring.

We may be tempted to ecological spraying of peach fruit trees in the spring, if the infestation of peaches in the previous season was small and we performed the above mentioned copper spraying in the fall. Then there is a chance that in spring it will be enoughecological spraying for leaf curlmade with yarrow, horsetail or nettle extract.
Especiallyhorsetail extract is very effective against leaf curlThis spraying is used and recommended by numerous organic gardeners. If we are unable to prepare this macerate on our own, it is worth reaching for the ready preparation: Evasiol - ecological field horsetail spraying. In this way, we will avoid possible mistakes, which are easy to make when preparing plant extracts, and we will be able to spend the time saved on other work in the garden.

Another recommendedecological agent against leaf curl is LecitecIt is a preparation based on lecithin. Lecithin is a substance of natural origin used in many preparations and dietary supplements intended for humans - means to improve memory and concentration. Lecithin used in the garden strengthens plant cell membranes, blocking the penetration of pathogenic fungi. Lecitec is especially recommended to combat peach leaf curl.

Regular, alternating use of Evasiol and Lecitec in home and allotment gardens brings very good results and allows you to completely abandon the use of chemical protection of the peach against leaf curl .

During the growing season, it is also worth remembering to remove infected leaves and young shoots, and if last year's curl infection was large, it is worth making a cut that exposes the entire crown of the tree.
Treatmentpeach against leaf curlsupports proper soil fertilization and foliar spraying with 5% urea solution in autumn. Autumn spraying of fruit trees with urea solution is recommended mainly in the fight against scab on apple and pear trees, but it is also worth spraying peaches and all fallen leaves lying under the trees with urea.If we do not use all our urea for autumn spraying, as a fertilizer, urea will be useful in the spring (it is a great nitrogen fertilizer for various plants).

Peach leaf curl - spring spraying

Spraying peach with fungicides, i.e. fungicides, is used in the spring, or rather in the early spring. Correct spraying of leaf curl is very important. This is very important because during this period the mycelium grows to the buds and only then can we destroy it.When the buds break, it will be too late - the spraying will not destroy the fungus that has already penetrated the tissues. An additional important factor influencing the spraying efficiency is the air temperature, which must not be lower than 6 ° C.As a rule, the right time to spray against frizz is at the turn of February and MarchHowever, we must carefully observe the weather forecasts and the state of development of the trees.

Note!
Due to the increasingly warmer winters, peach bud bursting can happen much earlier! This problem was discussed by Dr. Zbigniew Gruca in the Działkowiec monthly (January 2020, page 32).If there are periods of longer warming in late January or early February, peach buds may breakand a spraying will be required.

Forpre-spring spraying against leaf curlwe can also use Miedzian 50 WP or Miedzian Extra 350 SC.They are used at a concentration of 1%, i.e. we give 10 g of copper per 1 liter of water. It is important that the water used is not very cold or hard. If someone can measure the acidity of water, it should have a pH below 7.0. The peach shoots should be sprayed very thoroughly.

However, if we sprayed with Miedzian in the fall, it is worth using another protective measure in the spring. The most frequently used preparation for pre-springspraying on peach leavesis Syllit 65 WP. This preparation is recommended for amateur crops in allotment gardens and home gardens due to its relatively low environmental impact. Some experts previously recommended Carpene 544 SC as an even more effective remedy against frizz. Unfortunately, at present this agent is available only to professional users and we cannot use it in amateur crops on plots and in gardens.
Remember that the spraying must be done very carefully, spraying the entire tree crowns, both the branches and the trunk. This is important becausethe frequent reason for the ineffectiveness of spraying leaf curl is inaccurate sprayingObserve the precautions required when spraying chemical plant protection products.
And if you have a headache at the very thought of spraying peaches with all this chemistry, the more so because the effect is not guaranteed anyway, I suggest sticking to natural and ecological methods. The more so that the previously mentionedecological preparations for leaf curl, i.e. Evasiol and Lecitec, are an excellent alternative to chemical sprayingTheir appearance on the market (both are new for 2018) completely changes our approach to protect the peach from frizz. We invite you to purchase original plant protection products and ecological preparations in our store. This is a guarantee of high quality and satisfaction with the purchase.
