Shrubs grafted on a trunk - decorative and functional values

Ornamental shrubs grafted on a trunkare created by inoculating a selected variety with interesting ornamental values on a plant that serves as a rootstock. It's just that in this case the place of vaccination is not just above the ground, but in the upper part of the trunk formed by the rootstock. Thanks to this, a characteristic trunk is obtained, reminiscent ofminiature tree

In this way, you can graft shrubs of attractive habit, obtaining interesting forms of trees with hanging, weeping shoots, forming umbrella or spherical crowns, as well as interestingly flowering shrubs, obtainingminiature standard trees covered with lots of colorful flowers.
Stem graftingalso allows you to decide on the height of the plant, which usually depends on the height of the grafting site. As a result, the same ornamental shrub can be grafted onto rootstocks of different heights, resulting in plant heights of different heights, depending on the needs. Thanks to grafting a decorative variety on a rootstock, apart from an interesting appearance and limited size, plants are also obtained that are more resistant, durable and easier to care for. Shrubs grafted on a trunk - care

Caretrunk-grafted ornamental shrubsdoes not differ significantly from the care of ordinary shrubs. These plants, as well as others, require providing them with the appropriate cultivation position (depending on the requirements of a given species and variety), as well as fertilization and watering. It is also important to correct the shape of the crown by appropriate cutting, encouraging the plant to branch and thicken. What is characteristic of the care ofornamental shrubs grafted on a trunkis the necessity for some species to tie the trunks to the stakes and to remove the shoots growing out of the rootstock so that they do not choke the shoots of the grafted noble variety. Below we present some of the most interesting and popular ornamental shrubs grafted onto a trunk, which are perfect for our gardens.

Stump-grafted ornamental shrubs - interesting species and varieties

Many of thetrunk-grafted ornamental shrubscan be found in our gardens as a wonderful and easy-care decoration. Some of them, however, attract special attention and are extremely attractive. Here are a few of my favorites, among bushes grafted on a stem.
Roses grafted on a stem
Stem grafted roses, also known colloquially as rose trees, are made by budding a noble rose with beautiful flowers on the trunk (rootstock) of a wild rose.Rose seedlings are most often grafted at a height of 60 to 140 cm. The smallest ones, grafted at a height of about 60 to 90 cm, are perfect for growing in pots on balconies and terraces.

Climbing and groundcover varieties with long stems are often grafted on higher trunks. As a result, rose trees with an umbrella habit or with cascading shoots are obtained, which looks great during flowering (hence the sometimes used name - cascade roses). They can be planted individually as a characteristic element of the garden or create flowering rows. When deciding to cultivatestem grafted rosesremember to tie the stem to a stake and to cut the bushes properly to maintain their habit.

Japanese willow 'Hakuro Nishiki'
Japanese whole-leaved willow (Salix integra) 'Hakuro Nishiki' astrunk grafted bushtakes the form of a small tree with a spherical crown. Its colorful leaves are a special decoration. Young spring leaves are white-pink-green, but with time they turn white-green and remain so for most of the season. Plants are grafted on trunks 0.5 to more than 1.5 meters high. Thus, plants of various heights are available. The smaller ones are perfect for pots on balconies and terraces, while the larger ones can be planted in well-exposed places in the garden as solitaire or in compositions with other plants that constitute the background for them. In addition to its attractive appearance, the popularity of this variety of willow is determined by easy care and low soil requirements. However, you should remember about feeding the plant with fertilizers, regular cutting to preserve the tree's habit and compaction (it endures intensive pruning very well) as well as securing the grafting site for the winter, especially in young specimens (the entire tree crown can be wrapped with agrotextile).

Weeping willow Iwa
Iwa willow (Salix carpea pendula) is one of the most beautifulvarieties of willow grafted onto the trunko weeping, hanging shoots. Due to its weeping nature, it introduces a melancholic atmosphere to the garden and encourages us to reflect on our lives. It is a fully frost-resistant and easy-to-grow plant, recommended for beginner gardeners. Its soil requirements are not high, but you should remember to water it regularly, because, like other willows, it likes moist soils. Taking advantage of its moisture-loving preferences, it is worth planting it on the edge of a pond with overhanging shoots, which will look great. It is also perfect for balcony pots and containers, and due to its resistance to air pollution, it works well in cities. An additional decoration of this willow are golden-yellow base, appearing along last year's shoots, in the period from March to April, even before the leaves develop. They are a valuable, early spring benefit for bees.

European Larch 'Pendula'
European Larch (Larix decidua) 'Pendula' is a highly valued form of hanging larch. It is worth knowing that this is a collective name for a number of creeping varieties of larch, which may differ slightly in characteristics. The most popular, however, areforms obtained by graftingon the trunk, thanks to which amazing conifers with weeping habit are obtained. They grow best in full sun in rich, moderately moist soil. Importantly, larch is a needle-dropping plant for the winter, which distinguishes it from other conifers. It has its charm, as young needles appearing already in early spring are initially vivid green, then darken to turn yellow in the fall, before falling off. In autumn, therefore, this plant fits perfectly with the fiery-sunny colors of deciduous shrubs.
Of course, these are just some of the suggestions from thetrunk grafted rangeThese examples show how unusual and fabulously beautiful plant forms are obtained in this way. Therefore, I encourage you to independently search for ornamental shrubs grafted onto a trunk, suitable for your gardens, balconies and terraces.
