Greenhouse at home - growing seedlings

Table of contents

Not all plants are reproduced by sowing. Sometimes we have cuttings in the form of woody, semi-woody or leaf cuttings. Many of us wonder where and under what conditions to keep them to take root.

Minimalist

I propose to make a special device - minimizer.

  • You will need a large plastic pot for this. We fill it in layers. First, arrange the drainage, e.g. from gravel.
  • Then we put a layer of peat or forest mulch, and finally some sand or perlite granules. Leave a few centimeters of free space from the top edge of the container.
  • Cover the pot with a piece of glass. Place the prepared minimizer with the stand on the window sill near the radiator.

It is suitable for rooting small shoots, such as begonias and pelargoniums. When we have taller plants, we cover them with a suitably sized jar or plastic bags. To prevent the foil from sticking to the cuttings, it is worth sticking wire or sticks supports to the ground and rest the cover on them.

If we keep the cuttings in a room with no central heating, we can heat the device from the bottom with a light bulb. How to do it, see the attached drawing.

Preparation of the pot for the propagation of small cuttings:
a) glass,
b) sand layer,
c) moisture-retaining material, e.g. peat, d) drainage layer.

Heated mini-cup: 1. jar or plastic bag, 2. thermometer, 3. pot prepared as in the picture on the left, 4. ceramic pot, 5. bulb holder.

In the case of this device, we need a large ceramic pot, under which the lampholder will fit together with a 15-25W bulb. Turn the container upside down and place a pot with seedlings on it. It is worth sticking a thermometer into the ground to check that the seedlings are not too warm. When watering, disconnect the device from the power supply!
