The bulbs are knocked out by 20- to 30-cm tubular leaves.Spherical flower panicles are pink to pale lilac and form from May to August. The 'Grolau' variety is durable and excellent for driving.
Chives mature best in the sun or partial shade in a fertile, humus and moderately moist substrate with a neutral reaction. It tolerates the presence of other herbs well in intercropping, but combining it with cruciferous and legume species should be avoided.
From February we sow chives in the greenhouse, from the second half of the April to the ground. Chives should be grown in the first year after the manure. For propagation and to maintain the vitality of the plants, the crops should be divided at least every three years - either in spring or autumn.Occasionally it is worth growing feed with compost.
In winter, chives can be grown on the windowsill. For this purpose, cultivated in the ground after more severe frosts, dig out, remove old leaves and put them in water at a temperature of 40°C for 10-12 hours to interrupt the dormancy of the plant and accelerate its development.Plant the clumps in pots and place them at room temperature.Display the crops in a bright place.
Pick the chives 5 times in summer, 3 times in winter.Cut the shoots about 2 cm above the ground. Chives go well with for soups, salads, cottage cheese.
Chives can also be used as an ornamental plant, used, inter alia, in as a border for herbal and vegetable gardens.
