Not only because of the shape of the flower, but also because of its attachment to sunny positions. Significantly, the sunflower directs the flower head towards the sun. The sunflower came to Europe in the 17th century, most probably from today's Mexico.
Given the diameter of the inflorescence (up to 60 cm), the sunflower is the largest representative of the complex family. Inflorescence shoots are also used for decorative purposes.
Sunflower usually develops single, strong stalks covered with fine, stiff hairs. The inflorescence consists of lingual flowers arranged in a ring and middle tubular flowers.Depending on the variety, the sunflower reaches a height of 40-250 cm.
Sunflower grows best in the sun, in fertile, moderately moist, well-drained soil.
From April, the seeds can be sown directly into the ground. Low-growing varieties can also be planted in pots.
The sunflower should be watered and fed regularly. Tall varieties can be supported.
Sunflower looks attractive in rural gardens, where it can be grown along fences or buildings. In flower beds (in other types of gardens) it creates a nice background for other plants. Can be used as a cover planting in group plantings. Low varieties can be displayed on the patio in potted cultivation.
The sunflower is suitable as a cut flower. Stems collected with undeveloped buds remain in the vase for 2-3 weeks.
