Rosarium in pots

Table of contents

Sunny beds are best for growing roses. However, nothing prevents you from moving the same shrubs to containers and growing on the terrace. This is a new hope for those who, living in colder regions of Poland, have not been lucky with wintering bushes in the ground so far.

It is easier with potted roses, because they are moved to the quarters for the winter. Roses drop their leaves in winter, so they can winter without light, e.g. in a dark cellar. There is only one condition: the ambient temperature must be between -10 and 8 ° C.

In summer, we place the pots in a sunny, airy place, so that the leaves dry quickly after the rain (otherwise the roses may get sick). The fungal pathogens that attack roses are the most dangerous. If for some reason the pots are to be left outside the whole year, it is recommended to move them to a different, less sunny position in late autumn.

The sun would stimulate the shrubs to sprout prematurely and thus expose them to frost. It is best to place the bushes in a sheltered position in the shade, where temperature fluctuations are not large .

Forms with strictly defined characteristics regarding the form of growth and size are preferred for pot cultivation. Compact shrubs with fragrant flowers are ideal. It is worth starting your search for interesting varieties among small bush and dwarf roses.Interesting specimens are also found among bushy, multi-flowered, climbing and even large-flowered ones. One thing is certain: you should avoid strongly growing ramblers. These work best in field cultivation.

Potted roses are commercially available practically all year round. Depending on their condition, they can be left in their original pots or replanted (into larger containers). Before planting, put bare-root roses in the water (for a few hours), trim the roots and, if necessary, also above-ground shoots.

Roses grown in clay pots have the best conditions for development, because such a container "breathes".The pot must have a water drainage hole, covered with an earthen shard of an old pot and covered with gravel or expanded clay drainage.

The drainage must be covered with a fleece so that the substrate does not contaminate the drainage. Plant the roses so that the grafting site is 5 centimeters below the ground. Finally, compact the soil and water it generously.

In the care of roses, especially those repeating flowering, it is important to regularly remove faded flowers. This will make the roses bloom and bloom. If the flowers are not removed, the bushes will start to bear fruit, and this will cost them a lot of effort, of course at the expense of flowering.Roses overwintering in the quarters should be additionally mounded so that the grafting site is protected against frost. Place a polystyrene plate under the pot.
