X-raying the plum trees (Practical Gardener)

Pruning should be done every year. Thanks to this, we will limit the growth of trees and ensure an appropriate number of young growths.Because it is better to perform a little pruning every year than to prune the trees firmly once in a few years. .

Trim early fruiting varieties (including green leaves and mirabelles) in the summer, right after the harvest. In turn, the later maturing varieties, especially Hungarian ones, are pruned in March and April. An autumn cutting date is also possible, but carries a risk of freezing the branches during severe winters.

Principles for cutting a translucent plum

1. We cut out excess shoots in places where there are too many of them in the crown and where they shade each other.

2. We remove wolves, i.e. strong, unbranched shoots growing vertically upwards and competing with the conductor.

3. We cut out the branches that cross and grow to the center of the crown.

4. We shorten the shoots that grow too much to the sides and grow too high to be able to pick the fruit from them.

5. We cut out 1-2 strong branches growing out of the trunk or the guide wire completely to make room for new branches.
