Initially, dark, recessed spots appear on the green caps of the nut buds. The symptoms then spread to the nuts. Infected buds and nuts rot and then fall off massively. This disease can destroy up to 80% of the fruit. As a result of infection, the fruit does not set and the nuts are empty inside. In conditions of high humidity, beige clusters of spores appear on the surface of the fruit. The source of infection in the following years is most likely the remains of infected nuts lying on the soil surface. The development of the disease is favored by excessive density of bushes and lack of air circulation. The disease is prevented by planting hazel in airy places (but not exposed to wind) and performing chemical treatments, starting from the second half of May, with Dithane NeoTec 75 WG or Pomarsol Forte 80 WG at 7-10 day intervals. In addition to infection by this species, the nuts were also infested with Botrytis cinerea, which causes gray mold. The fruit was covered with a gray dusty coating, empty inside and dropped prematurely.
