Interesting colors of flowers, beautiful leaves and a liking for shady sites make the frost-resistant Astilbe perennial one of the most desirable summer perennials in our gardens. It has one more advantage: it is not on the menu of snails' favorite dishes.Carefully selected specimens, from early to late flowering, will decorate shaded flower beds from June to September. They can create colorful spots on the green background of magnificent leaves of ferns, funkia and treetops or eye-catching flower bands in various shades white, pink or red colors.
Tawułki are also a great company for beautifully blooming rhododendrons. Delicate, luxuriantly blooming panicles emphasize the beauty of the leathery leaves of these flowers. They also feel great in the shaded zone of the riverside pond or stream.
Tawułki are perfect for a semi-shaded or shaded pot garden. Forms planted in containers, slightly hanging paniculate inflorescences, such as the pink blooming 'Sprite' variety or Arends 'Brautshleier' with white flowers on the shoots about 70 cm long, look particularly picturesque.
Many varieties of tawułki that we buy in garden centers are perennials known and appreciated for decades. We owe many beautiful forms to the German perennial grower Georg Arends (1863-1952). In the group of Arends hybrids there are, among others the red-flowering 'Fanal' variety, reaching a height of 70 cm, and the lilac-pink 'Amethyst' cultivar, the flower stems of which are about 100 cm long.Among the new varieties, we can choose 'Maggie Daley' with dark green leaves and fragrant purple inflorescences. The hybrid variety Astilbe chinensis 'Visions in Pink' also has a delicate scent. Its dark pink panicles of flowers hover above the decorative bluish-green leaves as early as July. This variety also feels good in dry places.
Tawułki likes partially or fully shaded positions. They prefer fertile, humus-rich soil that is as evenly moist as possible. In order for them to bloom profusely, we feed them with mineral fertilizer in the spring, and with a portion of compost in autumn.sleeping shoots, we cover them with humus soil.
Tawułki are valuable plants for shaded flower beds not only because of their magnificent inflorescences. Many varieties have exceptionally beautiful leaves that decorate the flowerbed when the flowering period is over. In addition to specimens with shiny dark green leaves, varieties in beautiful shades of brown and copper are noteworthy, including 'Bronce Elegans',' Dunkellachs' and'Aphrodite '.
The new variety of 'Color Flash' (50 cm high) changes the color of the leaves several times. Spring green turns dark red in summer. In fall, the leaves finally turn yellow and orange.
