Technique of transplanting a few-year-old trees (Tip)

Table of contents

The best time to replant an older tree is in late fall or early spring. Remember that the tree should remain dormant. It is not recommended to transplant during vegetation, because then transpiration occurs through the leaves and the plants wilt quickly.Transplanting smaller trees is easier to do.All you need to do is dig out a tree with a root ball, trying to keep the roots together with the soil.

So that the soil does not crumble during transport, the root system can be wrapped with cloth. Transplanting large trees takes two years. In the first year, in the spring, we dig a groove about 0.5 m deep and 20 cm wide around the tree. The distance of the groove from the trunk depends on the size of the tree. The older the tree, the farther away from the trunk we dig a groove. As an indication, you can take a distance of 30-50 centimeters from the trunk.

If roots appear while digging, cut them with a pruner or a saw. Fill the dug groove completely with leaf soil or peat and sand. The substrate prepared in this way creates very good conditions for root development. Within a year, a whole bunch of fine roots will develop in the groove.Immediately before transplanting a tree, the crown must be carefully trimmed. This will, on the one hand, facilitate the transport of the tree and, on the other hand, ensure better reception after planting.

After digging the tree in the spring of the next year, we try to protect, first of all, the young roots. In order to prevent mechanical damage to the bark, it is worth wrapping the entire trunk with a strong material. After transporting the tree to a new place, plant it to the same depth as it grew previously. One of the most important activities in the following weeks is watering due to the poorly developed root system.Often it is also necessary to fasten the tree to the support so that it does not tip over.
