Practical Gardener: tasks for the beginning of autumn

Decorative garden in September

Remove fading flowers
By removing decaying inflorescences, we prevent seeds from maturing and spilling out, and thus the sowing of unwanted plants. By removing faded flowers, we also extend the flowering period of perennials and annuals.

Dig out the lily bulbs
Lily bulbs, like most summer and autumn flowering species, have living roots and bare scales that must be kept from drying out.For this purpose, they are kept covered with peat, sand or sawdust for several days before planting.

Planting of bulbous plants

We plan to plant bulbs at the beginning of the month. The chosen position must be prepared very well. We should pay particular attention to the proper preparation of the soil, i.e. taking care of its structure. Remember that bulbs should not be planted on heavy and catchment soils.

Such soils must be loosened by adding compost, sand or de-acidified peat.Very light soils are also unsuitable for bulbs.Planting bulbs can be started in the second half of September, as also in early October.

Trees and shrubs: shrubs that smell like carrots

In Polish climatic conditions, the heart-shaped Houttuynia cordata is actually a perennial, but during mild winters, the above-ground part does not die, because the stem bases are woody.Creates short, 20-40 cm plants, often creeping along the surface of the ground as they grow in underground rhizomes. It grows naturally in China and Japan on the shores of waterways. It creates heart-shaped or ovate leaves that exude an aromatic, carrot-like scent.

The 'Chameleon' varieties with attractive green-yellow-red leaves and 'Aurea' with leaves predominantly yellow are very decorative. The heart-shaped butterfly grows best when planted on the banks of ponds, streams and on the so-called swamps or natural depressions where water often accumulates.

Balconies and terraces: the meaning of the potato wolf

Potato wolf Ipomoea batatas, also called sweet potato or sweet potato, is most often used in multi-species compositions in balcony boxes and large pots.Several of its varieties are cultivated for their decorative leaves. But you have to know that it is one of the most important starchy plants in the world, and at the same time the most important bulbous plant in subtropical areas, and the basis of food for the population of many countries .

Potato wolf tubers mainly contain starch and some sugar, which gives them a sweetish taste. Like potatoes, sweet potatoes can be prepared in many different ways and used for many purposes (boiled, dried, roasted, processed into starch and alcohol). They keep them worse than potatoes.Sweet potato has a huge number of cultivated forms that differ in shape and color of leaves and tubers, as well as color and consistency of the flesh.

Vegetable plant: late sowing winter cultivation

Winter cultivation, through the use of autumn sowing or planting, allows you to get early crops in spring. Suitable for this purpose: spinach, onion, lettuce, endive, lamb's lettuce, leek and seven-year-old onion. Unfortunately, this cultivation carries the risk of failure.

Depending on the course of weather conditions, plants may survive it in winter, but as a result of vernalization, they may produce inflorescence shoots too early in spring, which will significantly reduce the yield. To prevent this, after the frost comes, let's cover the beds with agrotextile, which will facilitate the wintering of plants and protect them from freezing.

Sad: ałycza is also a plum

Of all the species grown in our gardens, plums are distinguished by the greatest variety of shapes, colors and flavors. Hungarian plums or green leaves have been known and valued for many years for their versatile use. The popular Prunus divaricata plum tree is most often confused with mirabelles. Not without a reason, because both mirabelle plum and alecha bear small, round-shaped fruit.

When the fruit is fully ripe, it takes on a uniform yellow shade. Sometimes you can also meet ałyczę with fruits with a red blush or even completely carmine. The flesh of these plums tastes different from that of cultivated varieties. Often, it does not come off the stone and has a floury, soft texture.According to some, it resembles the flesh of ripe apricots.

Contrary to some cultivated varieties, it contains a lot of sugar and this feature is especially appreciated by amateurs of sweet fruits.Of course, the sweetest are fully ripe fruits, i.e. those that are almost fall from trees.

Ripe fruit dropping is another feature of these tasty plums. In some years there are so many fruits that if not picked in time, they fall, covering almost the entire surface under the tree. So what should be done to harvest the fruit quickly? All we have to do is place two larger pieces of cloth around the trunk and then shake the tree vigorously.

Ripe fruits will fall on the material, which will save us the time-consuming picking them from the tree or picking tiny fruits from the grassland.
