In January, sowing of plants grown from seedlings begins, such as continuously flowering and tuberous begonia, garden petunia or Peruvian heliotrope.Flat plastic boxes are most often used for sowing.
Better conditions for the germination of seeds and seedlings (ie appropriate temperature, soil and air humidity) are provided by mini-glass pens (available in garden stores). They are produced in various sizes. Some of them have a heated bottom. They are also useful for rooting cuttings, e.g. pelargonium, fuchsia or shrub golden shrub.
For quilting plants, as well as for point sowing used for large seeds or pelleted seeds, it is worth using multiplates (multi-cell pallets) or multi-pots.The number and diameter of cells in the palette are different. They are cheap and easy to use.It is worth remembering that the sowing substrate is usually peat substrate, i.e. high peat, deacidified and enriched with minerals.
Bulbs overview
We inspect the bulbs, tubers and rhizomes stored indoors over the winter. We check whether they are too dry, if necessary moisten (e.g. the rhizomes of a bead or sawdust in which there are organs of lilies, begonias and gloriasis). We also control their he alth. We throw away the sick and damaged ones.
Frost damage
In the event of severe frosts, check in the garden whether they have caused the plants to be pushed out of the ground, as it may cause damage to the roots and plant death. In case of danger, we press the ground around the plants.
News for the garden
We are planning next year's plantings in the garden. It is worth looking around for the species and varieties of perennials available from nurserymen. Many plants unavailable in nurseries can be multiplied from seeds offered by Polish and foreign seed companies.
How to find them? The Internet is invaluable help, where we can find offers from many companies offering a lot of rare and valuable species, including, for example, plants protected in Poland, but in other countries that are not subject to species protection.
Intermediate barberry 'Red Jewel' is a variety that derives from the hybrid of Berberis x media. In spring and summer, its leaves are dark green with a purple tinge, while in autumn they turn bright scarlet red.In this form, the shrub looks exceptionally beautiful, so it is worth planting it in your garden. It looks equally attractive in larger groups at a discount.
During cold winters, the bush completely loses its leaves (sometimes some of them remain). The best position for barberry is a quiet but exposed place, which is of particular importance in the period of leaf coloring. Intermediate barberry requires fertile soil, covered with mulch.
In winter, and also in the early spring, it is worth taking care of providing our body with a portion of he alth. One easy way is to eat sprouts that we can grow ourselves. The seeds of vegetables such as radish, broccoli, Mung beans, soybeans and lentils are perfect for this, as well as wheat, oats, alfalfa, sunflower seeds and linseeds.
To start growing sprouts at home, you should have ready-made seed mixtures with a sprouting machine (available at he alth food stores or gardening stores), or try to select seeds yourself.Instead of a special sprouting bowl, we can use jars or flat dishes.
In order to speed up the germination of seeds, they should be soaked beforehand. Soak lentils, soybeans, sunflower seeds, beans and chickpeas for 12 hours, while other seeds for about 4-6 hours. The sprouts will be ready to eat after 3-5 days.
We remove snow
Trees with an umbrella-like and spreading crown shape are particularly susceptible to splitting due to excess snow.During heavy rainfall, you should systematically shake off its excess.
We collect seedlings
If there are no severe frosts, we can still pick woody seedlings of colored currants, grapevines and chokeberry.
Fighting rodents
We check if young trees are not bitten by mice and other rodents. The resulting wounds are secured with a suitable agent. We put poisoned grain under the trees, but always in drainage pipes so that it is inaccessible to birds.
