Practical Gardener: charming plants for balconies and terraces

Bush silver

Shrub silver (argyrantema shrub) Argyranthemum frutescens comes from the Canary Islands, where it is a dwarf shrub. It is a perennial that does not winter in our soil. There are both bushy and standard forms in cultivation. The varieties differ in terms of growth force, branching, color, size and fullness of the baskets, early flowering time, and the shape and color of the leaves.

The most varieties with white flowers are: 'Atlantis',' Blanche ',' Dana ', Polly', 'Maja Bofinger', 'White Star'. There are also yellow flowers: 'Butterfly', 'Yellow Star', 'Beaute de Nice', pink flowers: 'Serenade', Summer Pink ',' Pink Chiffon ',' Ingrid 'or purple-red flowers:' Gypsy Rose 'and' Romanse ' .Bush silvery is a long-day plant. Plants must be watered regularly and abundantly throughout the growing period.

They also require large amounts of nutrients. Every week we feed them with 0.2-0.3% multi-component fertilizer with increased potassium content.Silvering can be propagated by yourself using 5-7 cm long apical shoot cuttings (preferably without inflorescence buds). The cuttings take 10-12 days to root, and after another 10 days you need to trim their tops, for the plants to branch out better.

Small-leaved kusatka

Small-leaved Kusatka Brachyscome multifida from the Asteraceae family is sometimes called the Australian daisy because of its origin. In Poland, for unknown reasons, it is not as popular as in other countries, e.g. in Germany or Austria. This plant reaches a height of 30 cm and branches very strongly, forming spherical clumps of diameter up to 50 cm.

Its thin, densely leafy shoots (leaves are delicate, pinnate and intensely green) are covered with a large number of margaret flowers - baskets 2-2.5 cm in diameter with a yellow center and white, pink, blue or purple ligulate flowers.

Kusatka blooms from June to autumn and gives off a delicate fragrance. It tolerates frosts down to - 7 ° C. It is perfect for balcony boxes and hanging containers. It looks beautiful when planted together with a foamy shrub, e.g. a stiff lantana variable or a Chinese rose.It blooms best in sunny places, but not too hot. It should be watered in such a way as to prevent either overdrying or excess water in the substrate. We supply power every 7-14 days.

Omączona sage

Salvia soaked Salvia farinacea can be seen more often in gardens and city flower beds than on balconies, although it is equally well suited for boxes.Soaked sage, our annual plant, reaches a height of 60-80 cm, and a width of 40 cm.Branches well from the very bottom and forms a lot of oblong ovate and lanceolate leaves. Its flowers are embedded in several whorls forming long ears.

The plant blooms nice and long from June to autumn. Requires a fertile and constantly moderately moist soil as well as a sunny and warm place. In summer, we feed it every 10 days, watering it with multi-component fertilizer dissolved in water. At the beginning of April, we can sow the soaked sage seeds in multi-pots or pots at home and thus obtain our own seedling.
