Practical Gardener: seedlings in eco-pots

Table of contents

Plastic pots are most often used to prepare seedlings. For ecological reasons, however, it is worth replacing them with pots made of biodegradable materials that decompose in the soil or can be composted.

The seedling prepared in this way is planted in the beds without removing it from the pots, thanks to which it takes less time. An additional advantage of such containers are breathable walls, thanks to which plants have very good growth conditions. There are many ecodonists' offers. The most common containers are made of paper pulp or cellulose-peat pulp.

These can be single pots or multi-pots with a different number and size of holes. They are intended especially for the production of seedlings because they are unstable and quickly decompose in the soil.Coconut fiber pots are more durable, in which you can grow plants for two years.

Containers made of rice chaff are a very interesting solution. In addition to their ecological values, their attractive appearance is their advantage. They can have different shapes, colors (they are always natural earth colors), and even patterns. They are most durable among biodegradable pots.

Thanks to smooth, waterproof walls, they can be used for up to five years. They decompose faster in the soil. Before planting the plants in the garden, they should be slightly torn or crushed.
