Practical Gardener: November is marked by chrysanthemums

Decorative garden in November

We wrap our roses

In mid-November we cover the roses, which are among the exceptionally delicate shrubs. The place of their grafting must be carefully covered. Sifted compost soil can be the best protective material. In order to mound roses, we scrape soil from the bed. However, remember not to expose the roots and not to expose them to freezing.

Bush roses are covered by covering bushes up to 20 cm high. With a high density of plants, the following will be helpful in covering: peat, sawdust and branches of conifers.

Good soil

Spread manure or compost on the beds without plants, then dig the soil, leaving uncultivated beds, which will enrich the soil with humus.

Recent cleaning

In November we are finishing tidying up the gardens and plots. We tear out annual plants, cut out the withered parts of perennials, leaving only those inflorescences that will decorate our garden. Some perennials (including grasses), left without pruning, winter better.Stems and leaves create a natural warm soil cover, preventing deep freezing of the ground.Snow accumulates among the stems, which protects the soil, buds and the roots.

Balconies and terraces: November marked by chrysanthemums

The floral symbol of the fall of autumn is chrysanthemum. Its unique beauty makes us more and more willing to plant it on balconies or decorate apartments with it.The selection of gilded varieties is huge, especially at the turn of October and November.Yellow, red and brown flowering plants match the fiery colors of autumn natureThe pink, purple and white basket varieties go beautifully with heather and ornamental cabbage. It is also worth paying attention to the varied structure of the baskets and planting, for example, needle-like varieties on the terrace.

Chrysanthemums grown in late summer should be transplanted to a new medium. We can then overwinter the pots with plants indoors at 4-6 ° C and wait for their flowering next year.Plants bought later are better placed in a container with a pot.For chrysanthemums to bloom as long as possible, you need to provide them with a sunny place and water them abundantly. With intensive irrigation, very good drainage is a prerequisite for the successful cultivation of the plant.

Trees and shrubs: orange beauty from Japan

Camellias Stewartia pseudocamelia Maxim.it captivates us during autumn days in the garden with its leaves turning yellow, orange and red.In the garden, it is best served in a sunny or semi-shaded position, which must be sheltered from frosty and dry winds. In its homeland it is a tree growing up to 18 meters, while in Poland it creates low shrubs up to 3 -5 meters.

A cooler climate contributes to low plant growth, which grows larger in width. Camellias requires fertile, humus soil, fresh, acidic (it is good to mulch it with decomposed pine bark). It goes very well with rhododendrons or other plants from the heather family.

Two varieties of stewards have been selected in Poland: 'Rogów', which is the result of the work of the Arboretum in Rogów (its most important advantage is its remarkable resistance to low temperatures in winter) and 'Julia', which is characterized by abundant flowering.

Vegetable: harvest is still in progress

November is the month when we should finish the harvest of late cabbage, root vegetables and summer leek varieties. The latter can remain in the ground in winter until spring, as they withstand temperature drops down to -15 ° C.Part of the pores intended for consumption can be dug out and dug in a sheltered place, not forgetting about the additional covering them with thick white agrotextile. We collect Brussels sprouts and kale according to our needs.

These plants are frost resistant, so they can be harvested successively until February. These vegetables are much tastier when lightly frosted, as they contain more sugars then.Until the frost comes, we can still harvest the radish from September sowing, but not longer than until the frost. The remaining vegetables are covered with foil during the winter.

Orchard: is a quince also a quince?

Quince and quince, although belonging to the same family, are separate species. However, both belong to both fruit and ornamental plants.Quince Cydonia oblonga is a branchy shrub, growing up to several meters in our climate.Sometimes it takes the form of a tree. The Chaenomeles sp. Quince, on the other hand, is much smaller and usually does not exceed one meter (its shoots are exceptionally thorny).

Pigwowiec is primarily a decorative plant. The main decoration of the bush are flowers appearing in April. Beautifully colored red and orange, they cover almost the entire shrub before the leaves appear on it.Quince is usually planted as an orchard plant (for fruits that ripen in late autumn).Dark yellow and hairy fruits can have different forms (depending on the variety).

Some are bottle-shaped like pears, while others are rounder. However, all of them are quite large, often larger than traditional apples and pears.Quince fruits are much smaller, inconspicuous, green or yellow, similar in size to a mandarin. The common feature of both species is that their fruits are edible and commonly used in cooking, e.g. for preserves. However, they cannot be eaten raw, because they are extremely hard (even after long-term storage).

In addition, they can be an extremely aromatic addition to marmalades, tinctures or jellies. The quince fruit is fragrant with a pineapple-lemon flavor. Quince, due to its citrus aroma, is a great substitute for lemon. The fruits of both species store well. You can keep them in your home cellar for several months.

Pond: when oxygen is needed

The amount of oxygen contained in the water decreases in the autumn, so it is worth placing the most ordinary aerating cubes in the pond, which can be bought with a pump at a pet store.Such a cube is attached to a long tube connected to the pump and placed 40-50 centimeters under the water surface. We do not put the cube on the bottom, because with the air bubbles, bottom sediments and warmer water will float, which during this period is extremely valuable for fish.

Depending on the size of the mesh, we can even install several aerators. Before buying a pump, check if it will be able to force air to the required depth. If our tank is quite large, we should obtain a special pump for ponds in the garden shop. There are also oxygen tablets available on the market, from which, after contact with water through chemical decomposition, we obtain a valuable oxygen.

However, if our pond is frosted, and there are live fish under the ice, we must install an appropriate set, maintaining at least one place near the water surface at a temperature above 0 ° C.
