The Practical Gardener: Summer under cover

Table of contents

In summer it is very important to maintain the right temperature in crops under cover. They should be ventilated regularly, because temperatures above 30-35 ° C inhibit plant growth.Such temperatures in tomato cultivation lead to uneven fruit coloring and the formation of the so-calledThis is because the synthesis of lycopene, an important anti-cancer ingredient, is inhibited.

Additionally, too large differences between day and night disturb the water balance in plants, which may cause deformation of the fruit and cracking of the peel of tomatoes. In cucumbers and peppers, they cause the peel to cork and the shedding of fruit buds.

Apart from airing, an important step is to shade a greenhouse or a tunnel. The scattering of light rays is obtained by whitewashing objects with chalk solutions, painting them from the outside. shade screens, i.e. materials with different mesh density, limiting the possibility of plant burns when the intensity of sunlight is too high.

Shading also lowers the temperature inside the object. In order for the plants to yield well, they should be systematically fed with fertilizers, but not exceeding the specified doses. It is best to use liquid fertilizers once a week, dissolved in water intended for watering.

Melons under covers

Apart from typical species, melons ripen under the covers. These fruits have been used for over 3,000 years. The name melon comes from the Greek word melopepon, which means soft apple. In Poland, due to the climate, their cultivation is possible mainly under cover, but in the ground it can also be successful.

The fruits of melons are harvested when the top part is soft, and there is a slight cracking around the stem and a sweet aroma is felt. Unfortunately, as a rule, they are not suitable for long storage, so they should be consumed soon after harvest.

The so-called winter melons with a thick, slightly reticulated skin, which ripen slowly and are less sweet and aromatic.Melons, like cucumbers, create male and female flowers that grow in the leaf axils.Female flowers grow singly, while male flowers grow in bunches. They are self-pollinating, but you can help them by using a thin brush and transferring pollen from male to female flowers.
