Practical Gardener: Oyster mushrooms from their own cultivation

Table of contents

Mushrooms can be grown on specially prepared and inoculated substrates. We prepare them ourselves or buy them in specialist gardening stores. The substrates for growing specific mushrooms are based on straw chaff and sawdust or stumps of deciduous trees. If we want to prepare the substrate for oyster mushroom cultivation, we only need straw and granular mycelium.

After soaking and draining for a few hours, the straw should be mixed with the mycelium. The substrate is placed in various types of containers, for example plastic bags, buckets or boxes.

Naturally occurring oyster mushrooms form fruiting bodies in late fall or early spring, but in cultivation it depends only on temperature and humidityi. Ready-made packages of inoculated substrate are also available for sale, which just need to be set in appropriate temperature and humidity conditions and wait for the appearance of fruiting bodies.

It is worth knowing that the used substrate after mushroom cultivation is a very rich source of nutrients for plants - they can be successfully used as an organic fertilizer.Additionally, oyster mushrooms have antibacterial and antiviral properties, therefore, dishes prepared from them naturally increase our immunity.
